Getting started Construction modeling techniques

First, gather the following tools & materials:

Cutting mat

Square

Utility knife

Pencil

Foam core board

Next, find a place to work... It's ok to sit or stand, whichever is more comfortable for you.

Now it's time to cut!

RIGHT HANDED

Set up your cutting mat, square, and foam core like this:

LEFT HANDED

Set up your cutting mat, square, and foam core like this:

Decide which type of cut you need. Your house will require you to make straight cuts, dado cuts, and rabbet cuts.

STRAIGHT CUT

used to cut a wall to the proper length

DADO CUT

used where a wall will bend at a corner or where one wall will intersect another wall

RABBET CUT

used when two walls meet at a corner

Things to keep in mind when working...

Our utility knives have retractable blades - blades should only be extended when actively cutting. No blades should be left open on the workspace.

YES!!!

NO!!!

Cut only on a cutting mat - this protects the table as well as your project.
Foam core board is comprised of three layers - paper, foam, paper. Cut three passes with the knife to cut through all three layers.

When in doubt, reference the "cheat sheets" available to you in the classroom!
