At Whitkirk Primary School, we are Musicians! We want our children to develop a love of music and to grow up with ambitions to become producers, songwriters, composers or rockstars! We believe our Music curriculum should be engaging and fun, reflecting the world they live in now, but at the same time giving children access to musical styles throughout history.
Our curriculum builds on children’s knowledge and skills to enable them to confidently sing, listen, play, perform and evaluate. We deliver this through classroom activities as well as weekly singing assemblies, various concerts and performances and the learning of instruments. Our teaching focuses on developing the children’s ability to understand rhythm and follow a beat through performing on a range of musical instruments. We teach them to listen and to appreciate different forms of music across different time periods, cultures and traditions. This supports children to understand the cultural capital of being open minded in their listening as well as knowledgeable about a breadth of musical genres in the world today.
Our peripatetic teachers, who come into school to teach music lesson, give opportunities for children to learn and develop their skills from an experienced specialist teacher. These teachers offer: ukulele (whole class teaching to Year 3), guitar and violin (small group lessons to KS2 children).
