DISTRICT-WIDE STUDENTS

Deaf and Hard of Hearing Awareness Week

This week students and staff district-wide celebrated Deaf awareness week. At Mulberry, students learned an interesting fact about deafness/hearing each day along with learning a different sign and a famous deaf person daily and talked about good ways to communicate. Mrs. Mergen's first grade class practiced the signs they learned to greet each other in their morning meetings. Mrs. McDonald's fifth grade class watched signing videos during their morning meetings in order to communicate better with their hard of hearing classmate. We got together and wore Deaf Awareness shirts on Friday.

Also, students made presentations about their hearing losses to their 4th and 5th grade classrooms and answered questions from their classmates.

We've had a busy week! Jefferson Elementary Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in Mrs. Story's class are learning the Pledge of Allegiance in Sign Language to all sign together in the mornings. Students lead homeroom talks to advocate for our unique needs, went to classes to teach sign language, had special lessons about Deaf Culture, famous Deaf individuals, and started a Pin-Map to represent each group or individual who is Deaf and hard of hearing that we video chat with across the country! One of our former teachers, Jessica Beaty, now teaches in Houston, TX. We were able to video chat to sign with her class of students in their first week back in school after Hurricane Harvey. So far, nine more video calls are scheduled for next week to add to our map! While our population is small, our community is BIG!

Our Central student presented for her class, passed out information about Deafness, student designed large showcase highlighting Deaf Pride, and started up Sign Language Club to a large group of 6th grade kids.

At the high school, students made presentations to their teachers about themselves and their hearing losses. Students and staff learned interesting facts about Famous Deaf Americans, hearing and sign language.
