"The Distinguished Service Awards are the highest honor that the Judicial Council bestows. And it bestows it upon leaders who show extraordinary dedication. And why? Because everything in the law takes time. Whether it's a trial, a motion, the application of facts to the law, to changes to projects—nothing in the branch happens overnight.
And so these leaders, who are known for the work that they do in their area of expertise, have truly shown extraordinary dedication and a laser-like focus to the work that they do for the betterment of all. They've also shown outstanding leadership and by that I mean in the sense that what they do, we all know about it. It resonates with us because they have led and they've led despite having a demanding day job. In their leadership they've taught us, they've brought us along, they've interpreted for us, they've deciphered technical terms and difficult projects into language and action we all understand. And in that way, they have made outstanding contributions that benefit all of us. But most importantly, benefit the people who come to our courts. The people we all work for, the people that we've sworn oaths for.
We are here tonight to honor you, to hear your story, and to thank you for all that you've done. All that you've taught us. And all that you inspire us to do. Thank you." —Excerpted from Chief Justice Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye's Address, 2016 Award Ceremony.
