My name is Heather Morgan and this will be my 6th year of teaching. When I first started out on this life long journey I was a substitute for 2 years. I had the pleasure to teach in several schools, absorbing and learning everything I could. When the 2015-2016 school year began, I became the 5th/6th Science teacher at Lorca Elementary and four years later I am happy to say that I still have the pleasure to teach at this amazing school. Besides teaching I enjoy several hobbies including reading, gaming, catching up on my favorite T.V. shows with my boyfriend of 13 years, and playing with our two adorable dogs. It's the simple things in life that matter the most!
I am very pleased to teach Language Arts this school year. Reading and writing are essential to school success and is used in every subject as well as in our everyday lives. In Language Arts, students will develop several skills to help them become better readers and writers. Students will use literature circles to effectively communicate with peers and adults while analyzing the text. Students will continue to focus on vocabulary development and also begin to interpret figurative language used in writing such as metaphors, similes and idioms. Students will also read a variety of texts and genres and analyze texts by close-reads and citing evidence. They will read both teacher and student selected texts independently and in groups, as well as write for a variety of purposes. Technology will be utilized as a tool to research, organize and communicate information.
I am very excited for the 2018-2019 school year. Science is an exciting subject where students explore, investigate, gather data, make hypotheses and claims, while providing evidence from labs and readings to make inform decisions and conclusions. During the school year students will begin to learn about microorganisms and how they help with the human digestive system. From there students will learn about life science and explore how traits are passed from organism to organism. Next, students will begin to learn about how earth has changed throughout the years and the importance of oceans, atmosphere and climate. Students will also apply engineering skills to solve real world problems. During the school year students will connect science topics to other subjects such as reading, writing, math, and social justice issues.
It is important for students to take ownership of their learning and one way to do this to incorporate personalized learning within the classroom. We all know that no two people are alike and therefore learn about the world differently. School should not be one size fits all and there are several ways for a student to showcase their success at school. Within my classroom I have flexible seating to allow students to have a choice about their learning space. I have unique chairs, a small group table, an independent working area, and an area where students can view nature. Students also have a voice in assessments and how to complete a project. For example, some students may choose to write a paper, while another student may want to showcase their learning by creating a power point or by making a video. During 3rd quarter in Language Arts students will be given the choice to choose which literature circle book they would like to read. Besides personalized learning embedded within the core subjects student also participate in passion projects three days a week. Students choose the project they are most passionate about and begin to dig deeper into their hobbies and interests. Three times throughout the school year students will choose a new project to participate in. Some of the passion projects offered are Manga Club, Student Leaders, Fitness, Dance, Coding, and many more!!!
