Ms. Morgan 5th Social Studies & 6th Science

My name is Heather Morgan and this will be my 9th year of teaching. When the 2015-2016 school year began, I became the 5th/6th Science teacher at Lorca Elementary and 6 years later I am happy to say that I still have the pleasure to teach at this amazing school. Besides teaching I enjoy several hobbies including reading, gaming, catching up on my favorite T.V. shows with my husband, playing with our dog and enjoying time with my beautiful daughter who was born in spring of 2020!

Social Studies

I am very pleased to teach Social Studies this school year. Social Studies includes many essential skills from Language Arts which include reading and writing. In Social Studies, students will develop several skills to help them become better citizens as well as informed students about the world we live in. Students will gain map skills and learn about the country they live in. From there students will begin to analyze other cultures and analyze primary and secondary sources to understand why humans migrate to new places. Technology will be utilized as a tool to research, organize and communicate information.

Science

I am very excited for the 2021-2022 school year. Science is an exciting subject where students explore, investigate, gather data, make hypotheses and claims, while providing evidence from labs and readings to make inform decisions and conclusions. During the school year students will begin to learn about microorganisms and how they help with the human digestive system. From there students will learn about life science and explore how traits are passed from organism to organism. Next, students will begin to learn about how earth has changed throughout the years and the importance of oceans, atmosphere and climate. Students will also apply engineering skills to solve real world problems. During the school year students will connect science topics to other subjects such as reading, writing, math, and social justice issues.

Personalized Learning

It is important for students to take ownership of their learning and one way to do this to incorporate personalized learning within the classroom. We all know that no two people are alike and therefore learn about the world differently. School should not be one size fits all and there are several ways for a student to showcase their success at school. Within my classroom I have flexible seating to allow students to have a choice about their learning space. I have unique chairs, a small group table, an independent working area, and an area where students can view nature. Students also have a voice in assessments and how to complete a project. For example, some students may choose to write a paper, while another student may want to showcase their learning by creating a power point or by making a video. Besides personalized learning embedded within the core subjects student also participate in passion projects three days a week. Students choose the project they are most passionate about and begin to dig deeper into their hobbies and interests. Three times throughout the school year students will choose a new project to participate in. Some of the passion projects offered are Book Club, Student Leaders, Fitness, Dance, Coding, and many more!!!
