> Outside the Box a new year of innovative thinking with GO CAPS Monett

More than outside the box. Let's kick the box out of the way. That's the way we think in GO CAPS. We put students in professional settings so they learn daily how to be innovative, creative and critical thinkers. 5 unique professional Strands are off and running: speakers, tours, formal presentations, projects - these are all in a typical week for a GO CAPS student.

"We recently spent time learning from Matt Massey, Agronomy Specialist. I didn't realize how vital the use of technology is in the field of Agriculture. We were able to learn about the GPS enabled sonic bike reader. This innovation uses sonic waves to measure the height of fescue and other grasses, and is used to aid farmers in pasture and forage work for grazing. Our Agri-Business / Food Systems classroom is at the Southwest Research Center, part of the University of Missouri, located in Mt. Vernon. I look forward to coming every day knowing that what I'm doing and learning is at the cutting edge of the industry." Gunnar Bradley, Agri-Business / Food Systems Strand (Junior, Monett High School)

"My experience at GO CAPS has been great so far. Our class has toured the bunker (another word for data center), call center, print shop, and the airport at Jack Henry and Associates. The airport was my favorite tour because I want to pursue my career as a professional pilot. My future career plan is to go to college to become a certified pilot and fly for airlines or a corporate company. GO CAPS will help with my future career goals because I will be able to get hands on experience, work with professional pilots, and be able to fly with them and see what it's like in the life as a professional pilot." Colten Schultz, Business & Technology Solutions Strand (Senior, Verona High School)

Nothing is worse than missing an opportunity that could have changed your life.

"GO CAPS is an opportunity not to be wasted. This program has five strands, which are Engineering and Manufacturing, Agri-Business/Food Systems, Teacher Education, Business & Technology Solutions, and Medicine and Healthcare. Each strand has a different business classroom location and you get to experience many things. We began the year with bootcamp, which enhances our professional skills, and we help various businesses with problems they have and try to come up with a solution. I am in the engineering strand and we started out the year by touring EFCO Corporation, which is where we meet daily for class. Students say all the time that they want to become adults and GO CAPS allows you to do that. Everything is in your power and you are responsible for your daily routine to your business classroom location. It gives you the taste of being independent before you are independent. You are also ahead of everyone else with more experience and knowledge. Most students get job offers after being involved in GO CAPS. They make connections and take advantage of those opportunities helping them succeed. I can't wait to see what else GO CAPS has planned for me." Magali Sandoval, Engineering & Manufacturing Strand (Senior, Monett High School)

"My time in GO CAPS has opened my eyes with many new experiences. Recently we had a guest speaker come in, JJ Goulbourne with Cox Health Systems, who led us through the process to become Narcan certified. This certification trained us to be able to effectively respond to an opioid-associated emergency overdose. I was used as the example, and I had to lay on the table face up as the instructor was demonstrating how to use Narcan, the opioid antagonist medication that reverses the effects of an opioid overdose. GO CAPS provides me the opportunity for hands on learning that I wouldn't have gained in the ordinary classroom setting." Carmen Fillinger, Medicine & Healthcare Strand (Junior, Monett High School)

"Wow, these kids have literally opened up my eyes. Teaching a classroom full of Pre-K students is nothing but tremendously fun without stress. These past few days that I’ve been observing the teachers and the students, I’ve noticed some great things coming from all of them. The teachers have so many ways to get the kids engaged into learning, that it even got me doing some of these activities! I can’t wait to spend more time in classrooms at all grade levels with students that are so excited to learn something new!" Janeth Quinones, Teacher Education Strand (Junior, Monett High School)
