THE HISTORY

Since 1913, Luther has held it's programs, students, and staff to the highest standard. Whether it be in the classroom or on the field of play, excellence has always been pursued. The athletic program at Luther has been one of great success, sportsmanship, long tenured leaders, and rousing school spirit. The #blackgoldblack tradition is a feeling indescribable until you have been apart of it. Whether it's nearly 70 years of LIT, homecoming games, 22 years of the LIVT, the events put on by Luther Athletics are tough to beat. The students and staff give all they have to spirit days, blitz nights, and time warps. Prominent alumni, city and provincial titles, incredible wins, and soul crushing losses are etched in the minds of Luther Lions around the world, things of Folklore, experiences you have to see and feel to truly capture the magic of Luther.

THE PAST

The project

The spring of 2018 is when the first email was sent. The idea, to tell the Luther Story, in a modern way, to visually take in 100 years of Luther Athletics, without having to read a year by year account. The Semple Gymnasium's inner wall served as the perfect canvas to tell our story, and to invite conversation, to reminisce, and to learn more about what it truly means to be a Lion.

INNER GYM WALL - THE CANVAS

As the project began, the combing through of 12,000 plus pictures was meticulously done by the Luther Archives and Athletic Department. The photographs spanning over 75 years were saved, transferred, sized, then sent onto a graphic designer to be picked through and assembled into what is now displayed proudly in the Semple Gymnasium.

"There were so many people we tried to incorporate, ask for opinions, bring in on the project, to make it truly a community representation"

Taken into account was the vast history, information, athletic teams, leaders, and alumni who have proudly represented Luther. The idea was to move left to right, starting with some of the first athletics photos on record, and finishing with recent teams, and athletes as you progressed down the wall. A timeline of pictures.

THE PRESENT
"The goal was to create an opportunity to share memories, to ask questions, and to learn the history of Luther Athletics when you look up at the wall"
