Children of color need diverse books to see role models who aren't all white. Chad Everett of Scholastic Books states "When children cannot find themselves reflected in the books they read, or when the images they see are distorted, negative, or laughable, they learn a powerful lesson about how they are devalued in the society of which they are a part". We need more diverse books, in this case, for the children.
There are many more books in the world that are based around white people than there are books based around black people. The Cooperative Children's Book Center (or the CCBC) claims that there were about 47,850 published since 2002. Only 5,742 of these books were based around people of color. That's only 12%, and that's a problem.
