1867: The Weekly Visitor begins publication on March 21, a Thursday.

1868: The Daily Visitor begins publication five days a week on Jan. 1. The Meriden Daily Republican succeeds The Daily Visitor in March.

1886: The Meriden Daily Journal, an evening newspaper, comes out in April to compete with the Republican. It later becomes known at the Meriden Journal.

1892: The Morning Record is launched as a daily paper in October, as a continuation of the Meriden Daily Republican. The Republican becomes a weekly and eventually ceases to publish.

1903: The Morning Record becomes the Meriden Morning Record.

1925: The Meriden Morning Record becomes the Meriden Record in January.

1949: The Meriden Record Company purchases the Meriden Journal.

The 11 Crown St. building served as the newspaper headquarters for more than a century.

1977: The Meriden Record merges with the Meriden Journal in January, becoming the Morning Record and Journal.

1979
Cluttered desk are a staple of all newsrooms, illustrated by a shot of the Record-Journal news hub in 1978. But the typewriters of yesteryear, and the pneumatic tube (far left) used to transport stories and headlines to the composing room, have been replaced by computers and electronic ways of getting needed information to the graphics department.

1980: The merged paper becomes known as the Record-Journal.

1984 - First Sunday edition

1995: The company launches its first website.
