FORT MILL, S.C. - Fort Mill High School's broadcast program The Buzz TV won five awards at the Student Television Network competition, including Best Weekly High School Broadcast in the country.
Teacher Karin McKemey and 33 students flew to Anaheim, Calif. on March 26 to participate in the national competition known as STN.
The Buzz submitted videos before the trip and competed in seven on-site competitions, leading to two first place awards, two honorable mentions, and the Best Weekly High School Broadcast award.
"I've never been so proud of a group of kids," said McKemey.
This was McKemey's fourth year of bringing kids to STN and her tenth year teaching. She was also named STN's 2017 Teacher of the Year earlier this year and was given her award at the awards ceremony at the competition.
Julian Masters, Sydney Sigmon, Sydney Miller, and Zoe Cruz won first place for "Field of Dreams", a piece submitted into the High School Sports category. Olivia Rosner won first place for the on-site video she submitted for the International category.
The Buzz won the 2017 Scroggins Award for Best Broadcast in the Southeast at the SIPA, or Southern Interscholastic Press Association, competition earlier this year, making the group eligible to be judged for the the same category on a national level. This led to the group winning the Best Weekly High School Broadcast award.

Despite the immense success brought this year, McKemey feels it is her time to move on from the high school.
"I'm proud of the group for sure," said Karin. "But I'm super ready to retire, I'm going to go out on top."
