A Time To Read weekly update 12-2-16

With rain on the way and cooler temperatures, the weather outside is perfect for a weekend of reading and study! We are nearing the end of the semester and all of my students need to finish strong! Please review the following activities and assignments with your son/daughter to be certain that he/she is ready for next week:

6th grade: A typed and printed copy of a narrative poem is due Monday in English, and a post on Goodreads is due December 14th. Social Studies projects are due Monday.

7th grade: Study for a MAJOR Science test next week. Students were given a study guide to use for this important test. A movie trailer for the independent novel is due Monday in English, and a post about your novel should be on your Edublogs site no later than December 12th. Vocabulary is required for all 7th graders, 45 minutes to 1 hour each week at Membean.com.

8th grade: A persuasive essay was due today in English. Student should be reading their Social Studies text in both Hiott's and Vengler's classes, and students in Ms. Vengler's Social Studies class should finish their debating activity for Monday.

So, how important is reading every day? The statistics may surprise you!

Reading improves vocabulary, but "reading like a writer" GREATLY improves comprehension and writing skills. I cannot emphasize this requirement enough. ALL STUDENTS should have an independently selected novel and should be reading DAILY a minimum of 20 minutes. Please help me to reinforce this important strategy for increasing language proficiencies with your student.

Need a book?

Next week, the library is hosting a book fair! Students will be allowed to visit the book fair and purchase books. Please consider allowing your son/daughter to buy a new book and support our HCMS library.

As always, please contact me if you have questions or concerned. Enjoy this colder weather, as it is rare in Texas! I'll be attending a play with my grandchildren, "A Christmas Carol", and getting excited about the upcoming holidays! Enjoy your weekend!
