The most important rule is to keep the fire going because in order to get rescued you have to make smoke for people on ships, planes ect... can see you and rescue you.

One of the themes of this novel is survival. Explain why the setting of this story adds to or contributes to the theme.

The setting of this story that adds up to the theme is that there on an island without parents and there doing everything they can do to survive on there own until they can be rescued. Like for example when they separate into groups of two to go gather stuff like fruit, sticks and other important resources for them.

Ralph has said, “This is a good island” (Golding 35). Ralph’s pronouncement will prove ironic; it is definitely NOT a good island. What problems do readers already know about? Explain why these problems prove this is NOT a good island after all.

Some problems that show that this was not a very good island "The mullberry-marked face has not been seen since the evening of the great fire"(Golding 60).

Symbols are physical things that represent abstract ideas. The following are some of the symbols from the novel The Lord of the Flies.

Meat symbolizes the temptation the boys face on the island.

Conch-law & order

Piggy's glasses- survival

The Island- isolation

Smoke- rescue

The platform- democracy

Piggy- Civilization

Simon- goodness

Meat- temptation

Painted faces- anonymity

Describe the Beast that seems to be stalking the island. Use the text as backup for your info.

The beast that seems to be stalking the island is big, horrid and comes out at night."I was asleep when the twisty things were fighting and when they went away I was awake, and I saw something big and horrid moving in the trees"(Golden 85). Also they described it with eyes, teeth, and claws."The fire was bright- we'd just made it up - -more sticks on- there were eyes- teeth- claws- we ran as fast as we could- bashed into things the beast followed us- I saw it slinking behind the trees- nearly touched me- " (Golden 100)

Name at least two things the boys are doing or have given up that show how they are now operating on instinct and no longer trying to follow the rules of society. Explain your answers with information from the text

They are holding an assembly at night and one of the rules was not to go out at night. " Sam 'n Eric. call them to an assembly. quietly. go on. (Golden 99) Another rule they broke is to not speak unless you have the conch. "Jack broke in, contemptuously. You're always scared. I got the conch- conch! conch! shouted Jack. we don't need the conch anymore. We know who ought to say things." (Golden 101)

They hunted for pigs on the Island
They used Piggy's glasses to light the fire
Two rituals people are most familiar with are weddings and funerals. Pick an event (a wedding or a funeral). Make a list of at least 3 phrases people use at the event you picked. Using one of your phrases, explain why your phrase is helpful in the situation

The bride and groom say "I do"

Priest says " you may kiss the bride"

Priest says " until death do us part"

Saying these phrases lets them know that that they are know married and can go on with there lives.

Choose a character, either Ralph or Jack and explain the effect seeing the Beast has on the character you have chosen. Use textual information to support your answer.

The effect Ralph sees when he goes on the mountain with Jack and Roger is when they finally get up on the mountain they see the beast and they get scared and wait a few minutes to see what it does then the wind starts up the parachute moves and they get scared and start running back "Ralph found himself taking giant strides among the ashes, heard other creatures crying out and leaping, and dared the impossible on the dark slope; " (Golden 123)

Retell in your own words what has happened to Simon. Use textual evidence to help you create a vivid paragraph.

Simon was coming out of the forest to tell them that there was never a beast that it was just a dead parachuter who landed on the island and when he was coming out of the forest they all got scared so they went from a circle to a horseshoe like row and they waited till Simon who they thought was the beast to get in and then they started beating him up with spears and in the end they all ran and left Simon's dead body on the beach. " The sticks fell and the mouth of the new circle crunched and screamed. The beast was on it's knees in the center it's arms folded over it's face. It was crying out against the abominable noise, something about a body on the hill" (Golden 152) " Presently the heap broke up and figures staggered away. Only the beast lay still,a few yards from the sea. Even in the rain they could see how small a beast it was; and already it's blood was staining the sand.(Golden 153)

In life people create groups. These groups might be at school, in sports, in extracurricular activities, and through religious organizations. Explain what needs groups fill for people. Explain both the positive and negative aspects of being part of a group. You may relate this to our novel, or you may make it a person reflection of your own experience.

Groups help people become more sociable and makes it easier for people to work together. There are both positive and negative aspects for being in groups. Some positive things for being in groups are that when you work together anything is possible. Some negative things for being in groups is that sometimes it's hard to agree on things. Like in the story Lord Of the Flies by William Golding there are a group of boys stranded and work together and they accomplish things together and now they separated and are killing to survive. Also they are stealing from each other than relying on each other.

“Which is better - to have rules and agree, or to hunt and kill?”

Using this quote, take a stand. Pick a side and explain why your decision is best on this island here at the end of Chapter 11. Don’t forget to use textual evidence to support your answer.

It's better to have rules and agree than hunt and kill because if you have rules and agree it will help to survive together and if you just hunt and kill each other your going to have less people to help each other then its just going to be you and your going to have to survive on your own and if you follow the rules and agree with each other it will be more easier to hunt, and collect tools. "we were together then-"(Golding 202)

choose a picture and a quote from the book and add it to your blog.
"Coral Island- Ralph waved the conch. This is our Island. It's a good Island. Until the grownups come to fetch us we'll have fun."(Golden 35)

I choose this picture to represent the book because they use the conch for law and order. Through out the book they all use the conch to obey the chief, to call for meetings, or in order for you to talk you had to have the conch in hands. So technically it was also used to settle things. They where pretty civilized in the begging and a little in the middle. They where a little civilized in the middle of the book because when they found out that there was possibly a beast they started to get scared. They all went to go hunt it and when they finally found where it was Ralph,Jack, and Roger went up to the mountain saw it and after they ran down Ralph called a meeting and things started getting messed up. In the end there was two groups because some agreed with Ralph to stay chief and others for Jack so then they separated. Then that's when things went down hill, Jack and his group became savages while Ralph, piggy,Sam'n'Eric tried to stay civilized. After they killed piggy and smothered the conch into pieces Ralph was alone and didn't bother being civilized instead he ran to hide because Jack and Roger were going to kill him and when there about to corner him they come out in the open and see a boat and finally are rescued.

I think this novel was good it wasn't great but it was interesting. I best enjoyed this book when the teacher read it aloud. I like doing the blog because it helps understand what the book is trying to say to us readers and the meaning of it.

Jack's fire brought them rescue
