Pendleton Early Learning Center Strong Beginnings. Bright Futures

HUNT OF THE MONTH at Pendleton Public Library

We are partnering with the Pendleton Public Library in the PELC Hunt of the Month. Be on the lookout for PELC classroom animals out and about in the library! Each month a paper version of a classroom animal or two will be hidden in the Pendleton Public Library. Students are encouraged to visit the library with their parents and find the animals. Once they find the animal they write it on their monthly Reading Log and have a librarian sign their log also. This is a fun way to explore our town’s library and see all they have to offer.

NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH

We were so honored to have the drummers and dancers from the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation come and share with us their culture and talents. We also got to watch as a few of our PELC students danced. Thanks to everyone for sharing with us! What a very special event to celebrate Native American Month. In addition, we enjoyed a visit from the students in the drama class at Nixyaawii Community School. They shared three short plays which highlighted positive messages by using traditional Tribal Stories.

FRIENDSGIVING FEAST

Our kindergarteners recently shared “Friendsgiving”, a special event with 250 kindergarteners all seated together. They made applesauce, pumpkin pudding and enjoyed blueberry muffins. Also, a big thank-you to 33 Leadership students from Sunridge Middle School. They not only set up and took down all our tables and chairs, but also helped serve our students. We truly appreciate our PELC Parent Club for the purchase of juice, plates, cups, napkins and spoons for our feast.

GOOD MORNING GREETINGS

Greetings provide a way to connect with every student who enters the classroom. Students are given a choice of how they would like to be greeted: high five, a butterfly, a hand shake, a bear hug, a smile, etc. as they share a playful greeting together with the classroom teacher. This sends the verbal and nonverbal message, “Hello, I’m glad you’re here today!”

WALK TO LANGUAGE HIGHLIGHTS

We are learning a song in the Umatilla language for our upcoming Holiday Program, "Kismasmi Pataat." We look forward to sharing it with you in December.
