Dietrich Bonhoeffer was born in Breslau, Germany on February 4, 1906. He died in KZ, Flossenburg on April 9, 1945. Dietrich Bonhoeffer died from being hung.
Dietrich's parents were Karl Bonhoeffer and Paul Maria. He had seven siblings named Walter, Karl, Klaus, Christine, Ursula, Sabine, and Susanne. He was engaged to Maria von Wedemeyer. When he was engaged and planning to get married to Maria he was executed by the Nazis. Dietrich was 39 when executed.
Dietrich was homeschooled by his mother , until he was 6 or 7. He was expected to follow in his fathers footsteps to be a psychiatrist but he wanted to be a pastor. Dietrich completed his studies in Tubingen and Berlin. He also completed theological examinations at Union Seminary, New York. In Berlin he took a teaching position with the theological faculty. When he grew up he was a pastor, theologian, writer, and spy.
He wanted to serve when Hitler rose in power, and became chancellor of Germany. Also when the organized Confessing Church, announced publically its allegiance first to Jesus. Dietrich was involved in the Confessing Church in 1934, which was a movement that fought against the Nazification of the German Evangelical Church. Dietrich was also involved in "Operation 7." Operation 7 was a rescue mission that had helped a small group of Jews over the German border and into Switzerland. He served as a pastor to several German- speaking congregations in London, leading them to break with the official German Church and join the Confessing Church. Dietrich left a legacy in his writings that still provide valuable insight for Christians seeking to live faithfully to the Gospels in a culture dominated by the hostile ideologies.
He won the Christianity today book award and the Peabody award. Dietrich has had many quotes, one of them says "The ultimate test of a moral society is the kind of world that it leaves to its children." Another one says "If you board the wrong train, it is no use running along the corridor in the other direction." He also said "A god who let us prove his existence would be an idol." Matthew 28:19-20 says "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Dietrich was no longer permitted to teach at the University of Berlin because of his anti- Nazi views. His brother Klaus and two of his brothers - in- laws were also executed for their roles in the resistance movement against Hitler. Dietrich's parents did not learn about his death until three and a half months afterward, when they tuned into a radio broadcast of a London memorial service for their son. He was planning an unsuccessful assassination on Hitler, in the same month he was hung, Hitler committed suicide, and seven days later Germany surrendered.
