When looking at the state of any NCAA Division 1 athletics program, the goal of excellence every day demands success in multiple areas. For the ETSU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, the 2016-17 season resulted in the culmination of many strategic initiatives that reflected achievements on the field of play, in the classroom , in the community, and through infrastructure improvements, all of which were spurred on by record setting financial support and loyalty from our alumni and fans.
There is much to celebrate and relive following this past 2016-17 season, but the future is equally exciting as we review the state of our program.

ETSU alumnus Seamus Power is chosen to represent Ireland in the first Olympic Golf competition in 112 years. Power makes a charge on the final day, birdieing five of the first six holes and shooting a front-nine 30. A two-time A-Sun champion, he rises as high as a tie for fourth in the tournament, before finishing 15th.

Junior Fletcher Ekern's 92nd minute Golden Goal against the nation's top-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels rocks the collegiate soccer landscape and snatches a 1-0 Bucs victory. The upset of UNC marks the first time in program history ETSU has beaten the No. 1 ranked team in the country.

Volleyball Regular Season Title

With their 16th straight-set win of the season, the Bucs lock up the SoCon regular season championship with a 3-0 triumph over Mercer. The victory is their 12th in 13 matches and brings the regular season conference championship to campus for the first time since 1991.
Bucs Victorious over No. 18 Samford
After opening the season with a game-winning field goal, kicker JJ Jerman does the same to close the Bucs 2016 campaign. The 15-14 victory over No. 18 Samford gives the Bucs their first win over a ranked opponent since football returned to competition just one year earlier.

Bucs Win Over SEC Mississippi State

In a game featured on the SEC Network and played in front of 6,500 in Starkville, the Bucs get a tip-in with 1.4 seconds left from Hanner Mosquera-Perea to upset the Bulldogs of Mississippi State. The 67-65 win is ETSU’s first win over an SEC foe in six years.
Freedom Hall Renovations
Prior to the Bucs 96-59 dismantling of Fordham to open the 2016-17 season, a new video board is unveiled at Freedom Hall to mark completion of the $11 million in renovations to the home of ETSU Men’s Basketball. Other upgrades include roofing improvements, padded seating, and a new heating and air conditioning system.
January 28, 2017
In front of a sold out Freedom Hall, the Bucs outrebound Chattanooga 43-28 on the way to their first of three victories over the Mocs in 2017. The 76-71 win would be the first of two sellouts at Freedom Hall within a month, as Feb. 22’s Senior Day celebration filled the venue for a 93-81 win over Furman just 25 days later.
At a sold out US Cellular Center, the Bucs make good on their second consecutive SoCon title game appearance, downing UNCG 79-74 and punching their ticket to the NCAA tournament. ESPN’s national audience sees TJ Cromer score 23 to lead ETSU to their 10th appearance in the Big Dance.

The Bucs take flight in an air show that garners national attention. ESPN, SB Nation, USA Today, Sporting News, and NESN all highlight the high-flying theatrics on the eve of ETSU’s matchup with Florida in the first round of the NCAA tournament, with ESPN’s Instagram post of the action drawing 1.6 million views and over 4,000 comments.

Merriweather Electrifies #CollegeSlam
AJ Merriweather captivates the national audience tuned in to the Denny’s Slam Dunk Contest, earning three perfect scores for his thundering throwdowns. Merriweather’s first dunk, performed in a t-shirt paying homage to ETSU legend Calvin Talford, garnered 8,300 retweets and 16,000 likes from SportsCenter’s Twitter account.

Behind five shutout innings from Jamin McCann, the Bucs thrash the University of Tennessee 10-2 in front of a record 1,911 fans at Thomas Stadium. The top five in the ETSU order reach base 13 times on the way to their first victory in five attempts over a UT team coming off a series win over No. 7 Florida State the weekend prior.

The Bucs brought head-turning drama and excitement to their first NCAA appearance in program history - After a 63 minute lightning delay against Notre Dame built the tension, ETSU soon found themselves down to their final out, but senior Taylor Carter hit a heroic game-tying, three-run home run that would send the game to extra innings and prompt the game to be featured on ESPN2 for the second time that day.

An internet phenomenon, Bucs outfielder Aaron Maher and batboy Gehrig Skole set the digital world aflame with the Handshake Heard 'Round the World'. The video nets more than 10 million views on United States of Adventure, 851,000 views on ESPN’s Instagram, 5,300 retweets on ABC News’ Twitter, 6,500 likes on the SoCon’s Twitter, and 1,300 shares on USA Today’s For The Win, and is also featured on The Today Show, Good Morning America, and ESPN.
World Long Drive Champion

ETSU golf alumnus and current assistant golf coach Chloe Garner obliterates the competition at the World Long Drive Championship at Clash in the Canyon in Nevada, taking home her first title just a year into her Long Drive career. Garner's winning drive travels 342 yards, beating her opponent by 32 yards, and her longest drive of the season sails 370 in qualifying for the Rockwell Blast leg of the Long Drive tour.

Women’s Track Senior Katrina Seymour earns SoCon titles in the 60-meter dash, 200 and 400-meter runs, and the 4x400-meter relay at the conference indoor championships, while breaking the Bahamian national record in the 400-meter hurdles at the NCAA East Prelims. That performance sends her to the NCAA Championships, a first for any Buc in Women’s Track and Field since 2009, where she runs her way to the event’s final, finishing in 8th place.
