Hello, again! I am Dr. Paul Stanton, the proud superintendent of the Washington Elementary School District (WESD). We know you have choices and so we thank you for choosing the Washington Elementary School District to educate your children and grandchildren.

Below we wish to shine a light on some of the staff, student and community member accomplishments from the first semester. We also want to offer ways you too can engage with the WESD and support our students and staff. For those who have engaged with us, thank you for your dedication. For those who will engage with us, we look forward to building a multiyear relationship with you too. Please enjoy the holidays with family and friends and we look forward to an exciting 2018.

Holiday Wishes from the WESD Governing Board

Good News!

This accomplishment is thanks to the hard work and dedication of every WESD employee. We are fortunate to have amazing teachers and support staff who work hard each and every day to ensure student success.

This school year has been filled with great accomplishments and events.

Congratulations to the amazing staff who have received recognition during the first semester:

Grand Canyon University selected Phil Garitson, principal at Cholla Middle School, as the November STEM Principal of the Month.
Barbara Firkus, ELL teacher at Palo Verde Middle School, was chosen by Mac and Gaydos from KTAR radio for the "Pay Tribute to a Teacher" program, which recognizes top teachers in Arizona!
Mountain Sky Junior High Principal Perry Mason was honored by the Arizona Council on Economic Education with an Economic Education Leadership Award for his leadership and vision for the entrepreneurial program at Mountain Sky.
Palo Verde Middle School’s ELL and Intervention Math Teacher, Alexa Hawkins, was selected as an Arizona Cardinals MVP in the Classroom. This sweepstakes recognizes outstanding educators in Arizona.
Congratulations to our Fiesta Bowl Wishes for Teachers Grant recipients! From top left: Laura De Rito, Sunnyslope; Jeffrey Shedroff and Nicole Van Iwaarden, Cholla Middle School; Peggy Pitts and Marcy Hyde Tumbleweed; Suzanna Case, Sunburst; Clara Amaro, Desert Foothills; Kelly Valdivia, Roadrunner.

We would also like to thank our community partners who have made this holiday season one to remember:

Pure Heart Church, Orangewood Church and the North Phoenix Kiwanis Club provided food donations to WESD families in need during Thanksgiving.
Subway and The Be Kind Project donated bikes to kind students at Alta Vista.
The McKenna Youth Foundation donated new bicycles to WESD students from Sunburst Elementary, Ironwood Elementary School, Chaparral Elementary School, Desert Foothills Junior High and Mountain View School!
Mix 96.9 and The Mathew Blades Show surprised every student at Roadrunner Elementary with a $25 Walmart gift card as part of their third annual Cards for Kids Program.
These “elves” were volunteers from BBVA Compass Bank that were participating in BBVA Compass Foundation’s Project Blue Elf initiative, which seeks to bring joy and happiness to children during this giving season. Every kindergarten through second grade student was presented with a new toy or game.

Now Enrolling Students for Kindergarten

Kindergarten is the foundation for academic success. WESD offers a free, full-day kindergarten experience that includes art, music and PE. We are currently enrolling kindergarten students for the 2018-2019 school year. Families with a child who will be five on or before September 1, 2018 can enroll for kindergarten at our Welcome and Registration Center located at 3200 W. Cholla Ave. For more information, or to begin filling out the registration materials, visit the Web site or call 602-896-6950. Please share with your family and friends. We look forward to meeting you and your students.

Your Tax Credits Enhance Student Learning

We know that your time is valuable. This year, I am proud to share that you can now make a tax credit donation online. Donations will be used to support WESD’s 64 athletic teams, character education programs like Rachel’s Challenge, and special field trips. You will also receive a dollar-for-dollar reduction on your state income taxes. Thank you for your continued support this tax season.

If you would like to see what is happening each day in the WESD, make sure to like us and follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn. Thank you for supporting #WESDFamily!
