What's Happening This Week in 8th Grade???

English Language Arts

  • Read 180 (Romberg/Durrence): In READ 180, we begin our last READ 180 Workshop 9- “Unreal.” In whole and small group, we will work on vocabulary development, close reading, and paragraph response writing. In independent reading, students will read books on their Lexile level from the READ 180 library and complete reading logs. Logs have been changed to ensure progress in writing for GMAS. In APP, students will independently work on selected APP segments to close learning gaps and complete APP logs. Students should have completed a total of 5 segments, 5 novels, and 5 Ereads by Thursday, March 5th. Students will need their self-created vocabulary lists for a test on Monday, March 23rd. They need 1 word from WS8, 1 word from DBQ 1, 1 word from DBQ 2, and the other 7 should come from the word of the day on the morning announcements.
  • 8th Grade ELA (Hills): In 8th Grade ELA, scholars will begin reviewing the 8th Grade ELA standards for the upcoming Winter Reading MAP assessment. Afterwards, scholars will begin to review their understanding of literary texts while focusing on narrative writing.
  • 9th Grade Literature & Composition (Hills/Romberg): Lit and Comp will complete Unit 3: Coming of Age this week. Students have been loaned copies of the novel Romeo and Juliet (R&J) to use for the unit. These copies are due Monday March 2nd. Students will research and complete argumentative writing tasks. Students will take their final exam on Thursday, Mar. 5th. Students who have returned Romeo and Juliet will receive their class novel for Unit 4: Lord of the Flies and the first reading guide, which will be due Monday, March 9th. If students cannot return their copy of Romeo and Juliet, they will need to bring in $7.00 to cover its cost. Note: Scholars will take their 3rd quarter exam on Thursday, March 5th!!!
Note: All 8th Grade ELA and 9th Lit & Comp scholars will take the Spring Reading MAP Assessment on WEDNESDAY!!!

Science

  • 8th Grade Science (Herndon/Winkworth/Beasley/Joyner): The central focus of this learning segment is to develop the understanding of how unbalanced forces affect objects. Students will learn how to identify unbalanced forces and what the net force of a system is. An unbalanced force occurs when one force acting on an object is greater than another force acting on the object. Net force involves either adding two value of two forces acting in the direction on an object or subtracting two opposing forces acting on an object to determine the overall force affecting change.
  • Herndon's Tutorial: Thursday's 3:35-4:30

Social Studies:

  • 8th Grade Georgia Studies (Sanchez/Styron/Beasley/Joyner): Social Studies will begin a new unit (Modern Georgia) on Monday. This week we will focus on key people and events of the Civil Rights Movement. We will learn about the Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court Case, and the work of Martin Luther King, Jr. We will cover topics such as the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, the Children’s March, and the March on Washington. Students will create an annotated timeline this week that illustrates the important events of the Civil Rights Era in chronological order.
