Johnson & Johnson Vaccine Update
Johnson & Johnson has applied for Emergency Use Authorization from the FDA for its single-shot vaccine candidate. The Johnson & Johnson vaccine is 85 percent effective at preventing severe cases of COVID-19 and completely effective at preventing hospitalization and death as a result of COVID-19. FDA approval could come as soon as the end of this month or early March. Johnson & Johnson says it’s ready to immediately begin shipping the vaccine following authorization.
With these cold temperatures, the CDC advises you wear your scarf, ski mask, or balaclava over your mask to protect yourself and others from COVID-19.
- Winter face coverings are not substitutes for masks. Wear a mask correctly and consistently.
- Wash your hands or use hand sanitizer with 60% alcohol before putting on a mask.
- Do not touch the mask when wearing it.

Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street and the Downtown Lee’s Summit Community Improvement District are supporting the "Take Time to Be Kind” campaign by donating $12,300 in Downtown Lee’s Summit gift cards to the employees at Truman Lakewood Medical Center and Lee's Summit Medical Center.

Conceptual Incentive Request for Vanguard Villas. City Council gave a favorable opinion to a conceptual economic development incentive request for the Vanguard Villas, which would be located within Streets of West Pryor. Mine remediation is needed to stabilize the land for construction of the villas. The developer is seeking 50% property tax abatement for 25 years and sales and use tax exemption on construction materials. The estimated value of the incentive request would be about 9.5% of the total project costs. The developer must now present the redevelopment plan to the Land Clearance for Redevelopment Authority (LCRA) for recommendation and formal consideration by City Council.
Jackson County Reinvestment Fund Steering Committee. City Council adopted a resolution appointing Development Services Director Ryan Elam to represent the City of Lee’s Summit on the Jackson County Reinvestment Fund Steering Committee. The committee will provide guidance as Jackson County analyzes its existing housing stock as part of an assessment system upgrade.
CARES Act Funding. City Council moved to second reading an ordinance extending an intergovernmental agreement with Jackson County for use of CARES Act funding in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The agreement extends the deadline for the City to use its allocated funding to Dec. 31, 2021. Jackson County appropriated $5,921,537 of the CARES Act funding it received to the City of Lee’s Summit.
