Maria Dawe Sundarbans, India - 2018

The journey begins...

On 20th June 2018, I set off for Kolkata alongside eight complete strangers. These strangers soon became my best friends.

I was lucky enough to be placed in one of the most beautiful places in the world - the Sundarbans. Located about 3/4 hours from Kolkata, the Sundarbans is an idyllic oasis that radiates beauty in every shape and form.

Beauty all around us - especially the chai!!

Each day, myself and my incredible teaching partner Hana taught in the local village school - Nandakumarpur Primary School.

We were greeted by these beautiful smiling faces each morning for eight weeks!

We got the chance to spend Independence Day in our school...

And in between all of the singing and the dancing, we even got to teach our kids a thing or two about Ireland!

Ireland - India Day!

We got to know the locals very well over the summer. We drank chai every evening and even learned a phrase or two of Bengali along the way!!

But the must unique and incredible part about the Sundarbans was the 34 inspiring and energetic young boys that we got to live with. These beautiful boys were part of the National Child Labour Project (NCLP) and became our little brothers over the summer.

Our amazing boys

So if you're looking for a unique, inspiring, refreshing and outright unforgettable way to spend your summer, the Suas Volunteer Programme is 100% for you. It changed my life and it will change yours too. You won't regret it.

See you soon India! (Abar dekha hobay)
