THE DISCREET CHARM OF PEACE - Fragments of time and place in photography The series of photographs by Stane Jeršič takes shape in the conscious and committed visualization of contemporary urban environments in various parts of the world that have been "branded" by the uniformity of globalization. Within the architectural frameworks of Ljubljana, Berlin, Vienna, Valletta, Nikozia, Munich, Venice, San Francisco and the stigmatized city of Sarajevo tries to emphasize the dichotomy of human functioning in the environments of the modern world, in which the individuality of the human being is drowned in generally accepted codes of the prescribed behavior of the crowd. In a very subtle way draws attention to the unique identity crisis of the urban, by exposing the conflict between architecture – or buildings – as the props of local recognizability, and the people who, in their efforts to accustom themselves to the demands of time and space, ingenuously succumb to the patterns of global trends.

Serija fotografij Staneta Jeršiča nastaja v angažirani vizualizaciji sodobnih, z uniformnostjo globalizacije ožigosanih urbanih ambientov na različnih koncih sveta. V arhitekturnih okvirih Ljubljane, Berlina, Dunaja, Vallette, Nikozije, Münchna, Benetk, San Francisca in Sarajeva skuša poudariti dihotomijo človekovega funkcioniranja v ambientih sodobnega sveta, v katerem se individualnost posameznika utaplja v splošno sprejetih kodih zapovedanega obnašanja množice. Figure se zlivajo z okoljem, v njem izginevajo, se konformistično zapredajo v njegove nevidne niti in skupaj z njim oblikujejo iluzijo navidezne simbioze, diskretnega šarma miru v hipertrofiranem ritmu vsakdanjega življenja.

I would like to draw your attention to the work of famous Slovene photographer Stane Jersič. His project tends to establish a relation between space and the vastness of the scene by the wide means of the panoramic and the psychological and inner space of the face by the tight means of the close-up is, in fact, a fundamental photographic problem. The photographic image presents namely a tension between the quasi motionless space and the swiftness of passage, between the everlasting and the ephemeral. The "it happened" so often referred to since Roland Barthes has to be completed by "it happened there", which most often remains unnoticed. The work of Stane Jeršič wish to conduct has certainly other dimensions, however, it seems to me that the photographic specificity of his project lies precisely in this tension. Moreover, his work on the panoramic and the precise control of space it requires is, in his case, extremely well mastered, as can be observed in his published book Identity of the Place.

A mirror of our time

Photo No. 1: The generic rhythm arrangement of cloned spatial cells dictates the impersonal routine of everyday life. People are just a handful of figures where only the light entering through the huge glass surfaces gives them a note of the personal. The photograph presents in an interesting way the relationship between the building as an engineering object and the ‘captivity’ of the human individual in its interior.

A mirror of our time

We have been monitoring Stane artistic work in Slovenia, Europe, and the wider international area for many decades. But however, what makes him great has never changed. It is mainly about the narrative interaction of relations between man and urban life or the interaction between individuals and urban spaces. Through the visual language of the image, the photographer explores various human conditions and their role in the environments of modern architectures. The artist is interested in the relationship between routine, the apathy of captivity and the question of liberation, and the search for answers through the prism of art.

Umetniško delo Staneta Jeršiča spremljamo v Sloveniji, Evropi in širšem mednarodnem prostoru že vrsto desetletij. Fotograf skozi vizualni jezik podobe raziskuje različna človeška stanja in njihovo vlogo v okoljih sodobnih arhitektur. Umetnika zanima razmerje med rutino, apatijo ujetosti in vprašanjem osvoboditve ter iskanjem odgovorov skozi prizmo umetnosti.

Les visages de l'Europe

Photo No.2: The photograph depicts a human figure as an art object in a geometrically glazed ambiance, where the living figure is replaced by a sculpture. Instead of an office, an art exhibition. The cubic glass structure allows an outward view to interact with the outdoor urban space. Is escape possible? Is the light that seeps through urban captivity the only thing that reveals the meaning of art and brings us back from the artificial to the natural environment of the non-urban?

Bojana Čampa, BA in History of Art and History
