Does memory, especially in the form of nostalgia limit our knowledge?

The main point I want to make is that memory isn't as reliable as it may seem. Although one of our most powerful WoK, it is prone to failure due to the many factors that affect it.


  • * There are many bias associated with memory
  • * Our brain isn’t a machine, but a neural network that reconstructs memories every time we want to access them. Therefore, the memories aren't exactly what we remember, but rather what we construct them to be.

What did you learn today about your WOK?

Today I learned what nostalgia means and how it can be related to limited knowledge, as we can remember things differently than how they actually happened. Also, I learned that presenting it would be a bit challenging. How do you define memory, if neurologists still don't fully comprehend it. The factors that affect memory could be countless. We also learned how to condense a broad theme into a concise essential question. . All that is left to do is for everybody to deliver on their promises. In this case, the promises are to prepare for the class presentation and bring our assigned items for the presentation.

How prepared are you for your badge project?

We are pretty prepared for our badge project. We understand the WoK from a psychological Point of View, and this helps our understanding from a ToK point of view. We have also planned out exactly what we have to do. All we have to do is the actual project and figure out exactly what we're going to say and how.

What´s left to do?

We have to make our powerpoint more efficient in showing, and less summarizing. Instead of having our points on the powerpoint, we should be the ones saying our points. We need to clarify who will say what, and how. We are mostly prepared for the project, though.

Summary/Reflective Journal/Findings:

Overall, I think that this was a great project that was a great learning experience. The project was very beneficial to trying to learn and understand the Way of Knowledge of memory. We started off reading a chapter and trying to understand vocabulary terms to ending with a good visual presentation that we are very satisfied with. It provided a great insight on our knowledge question and the concept of memory. The start of the project consisted of trying to understand the WoK and coming up with an essential question. After taking the quiz, the project became very revolved around working as a group. We were not sure how to develop a project that accurately portrays the WoK of memory. Our final, condensed essential question was ``Does memory, especially in the form of nostalgia limit our knowledge?´´. The biggest problem that I think was making the project apply to the knowledge question. Our biggest struggle from then on was designing an experiment/project that would accurately depict the WoK of memory in our presentation. Our group was pretty happy with the final result. We learned a lot about the different factors that influence memory, and was satisfied with how our presentation turned out.

Elective Reading

This is a very interesting reading. It deals with how the Internet affects our memory and cognition. The author says how our brains can't remember everything we sense on the internet, therefore our memories discriminate between information to remember. Also, it raises the question if Google is destroying our memories. The author debunks this myth, saying that while Google makes specific memory unnecessary in some ways, our brains aren't affected by it. We still remember everything in our subconscious, even if we can't remember later. The reading also raises whether or not the Internet is negatively affecting our attention spans. The author also debunks this myth, claiming that our attention is too complex to assess the effect of the Internet. However, the author claims the Internet is an insanely effective distraction for our brains. Therefore, this reading was very useful to even further comprehend the WoK of memory, and to expand my knowledge on how it works. It provides a real world example with very real and relevant questions about the effect of the Internet.

Extension Proposal

This TED Talk deals with the reliability of our memories. The speaker is a psychologist who specializes in memory. The speaker introduces the topic speaking of a case where a woman was raped and asked to identify the criminal by determining which one he was from a set of suspects. The victim chose an innocent man, and the man was convicted for rape. This is an example of how memory is not always reliable and should not be always trusted to the full extent. The speaker then goes on to go into detail on constructive memory. This deals with how our brains design, or create a memory based on our senses and other memories. The memory that is produced is not an accurate one, but rather one that is influenced by our other memories and senses. This type of memory is what caused the woman to accuse the wrong man for her rape. This reading is perfect for this WoK because it deals with one of the most essential of the essential questions, how memory is not completely reliable. The speaker is obviously reliable, as she is a psychologist who specialises in memory, and goes into detail on how memory actually works. This reading expands the listener's knowledge on the WoK of memory, therefore is very useful and interesting.
