"As a member of the Essex Access Forum i have the opportunity to sit on the University committees to ensure that these are adapted to the needs of people with disabilities"

John Stevens, Service User in health and Human Sciences

"I have worked at the University since 1993. I now have a high interest in the effects of neurological rehabilitation on both an individual’s work and social life especially when integrated with my first love which was computing. Before I came back to the University of Essex in 2003, I was the Head of Department in Computing at University College London. After two and a half years as Head of Department, I fell seriously ill with Multiple Sclerosis, and I now have to use a wheelchair. Despite this, I went to the University of New South Wales in Sydney to work as a researcher for 2002.

I think I have a good work life balance as I work part-time, five days a week, but, due to my illness, only in the mornings. Although I am in the wheelchair permanently, I try to live as normal a life as possible."
