Three summers ago, we had a large group of staff members meet on several occasions to discuss our old "Behavior Card." The goal was to find a way to make this a more positive communication tool for our parents and students. This evening, you will have the opportunity to review and sign your child's "Character Card." This card was created as a scaled feedback tool to provide you with, not only the traditional information you have always received, but also a glimpse into the positive choices and leadership that your child is displaying throughout his/her day.
Knowing this, the office staff is requesting your help. We would like to share with our staff regular, positive feedback from a variety of sources. Please take a few moments and use the link below to provide some encouragement to those folks that are making a major difference in your child's future. These comments can be anonymous, or you can provide your name. The office staff will use the provided comments every Thursday for our #thankfulThursday movement. The attached form can be completed, as little or often as you like, throughout the entire school year. We appreciate your support in growing the culture of gratitude that already exists at MIS!!

2020-21 Textbook rental
Textbook rental is officially past due. If you have not submitted this for the 2020-21 school year, please be sure to do so as soon as possible. Statements went home with students this week if textbook rental is still owed. You can pay via EZSchoolPay, mail a check or cash to 102 N. Main Street, Maxwell IN 46514, or send it with your student. A critical ingredient in the safe school recipe is the classroom response to an incident at school. Weather events, fire, accidents, intruders and other threats to student safety are scenarios that are planned and trained for by students, teachers, staff and administration.
Standard Response Protocol: Our school has expanded the safety program to include the Standard Response Protocol - Extended (SRPx). The SRPx is based on these five actions: Lockout, Lockdown, Evacuate, Shelter and Hold.

NASA Calendar Contest
Below you will find the rules for the annual Substance Abuse Awareness Calendar and a fact sheet that students might find useful in creating their entry. The contest is open to all 5th and 6th grade students in the county. Selected drawings will be used in their 2021 calendar.
The grand prize winner will have the choice of either Beats by Dre wireless headphones ($200 value) or Apple Airpods. All other selected winners will receive a $25 Walmart Gift Card.

As mentioned previously, we plan to hold virtual conferences this year. These will be scheduled on the afternoon/evenings of October 26th, 27th and 29th. More details on signing up and how to connect for the conferences will be coming in the near future.
GCCSC Health Services COVID-19 Update (Effective September 8, 2020)
Temperature threshold being raised to 100 or higher.
Symptom improvement and fever free time period lowered from 72 to 24 hours (or per healthcare provider’s recommendation).
The COVID-19 Screening Tool for Parents Updated 9-4-20.pdf provided by the Indiana State Department of Health lists the following symptoms that will result in a student being sent home, or signal for a parent to keep a student home:Temperature of 100 or chills
- Temperature of 100 or chills
- Sore throat
- Cough or shortness of breath (especially new onset, uncontrolled cough)
- Diarrhea, nausea or vomiting, abdominal pain
- Headache (particularly new onset of severe headache, especially with fever)
- New loss of taste or smell
This list does not include all possible symptoms. Other symptoms may be considered when determining when a student should stay home.
Symptomatic students or staff members may return to work/school per the ISDH Return to School Guidance Updated 9-4-20.pdf.
- Symptoms are improved for 24 hours, fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing agents, and a negative COVID-19 test. Documentation of the negative test is required.
- Ten days have passed since the onset of symptoms, symptoms have improved for 24 hours, and fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing agents. No documentation is required from a healthcare provider.
- Alternate diagnosis given by a healthcare provider. Symptoms are improved for 24 hours, fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing agents and documentation from the provider must give a return date and state that his/her illness was “not related to COVID-19” or “Cleared to return to school/work”.
If any member of a household has a pending COVID-19 test, all household members must stay home until the test result is received. When a negative test result is received, documentation must be provided for household members to return to work/school.
When identifying close contacts, the 15 minute time period is now cumulative, not consecutive. Teachers/supervisory staff will use their best judgment to determine who is a close contact given this new guidance.
If a student or staff member is identified as a close contact to a non-GC related confirmed COVID-19 positive case (for example, spouse, grandparent, non-GC co-worker, etc.), documentation must be provided by a health department or healthcare provider indicating the first date of return. GC is not responsible for initiating or conducting contact tracing on non-GC related exposure. This documentation must have the student or employee’s name on it and their earliest return to work/school date.
Our school will be participating in the SchoolStore program again this year. This online program helps our school earn cash without students selling door-to-door, collecting money or delivering products.
