Jim Crow Laws

Respect

One Jim Crow law was that African Americans had to respect white people, no relationships, and no touching white people. Ex: African Americans would have to take thier hats off while talking to one.

Voting Law

White people would only have to get 1 question right to be an American citizen. A African American would have to pass the whole test, drive all the way to the poll, get through the sheriff, and pay a fee.

The Great Depression

The Great Depression was a long and deep economic downturn (1929-39). The Great Depression began soon after the stock market crashed for The United States. This made people who lived on Wall Street panic and wiped out lots of investors. Many people became unemployed and it was very hard to find work, some people had to leave thier country to find one. Not only did people have to deal with this but there was a severe drought happening, this made huge dust storms. This effected Cassie and her brother Little Man because they had to read out of old worn out books. This also effected thier dad who has to work out of the country.

These are some picture of black and white people back in the Great Depression.

Abolishment of Slaverly

For African Americans in the South, life after slavery was a world transformed. This meant that they wouldn't have to worry about whippings, assault, selling and relocation of family members, wages, denial of education, legal marriage, homeownership and much more. In Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation it states "I hereby call upon the people so declared to be free to abstain from all violence, unless in necessary self-defense; and I recommend to them that, in all cases when allowed, they labor faithfully for reasonable wages." This meant everything to African Americans they didn't have to worry. In Roll of thunder it states "“Well, maybe she couldn’t help it, Cassie. Maybe she had to do it.” This is after the scene when Big Ma tells Cassie to apologize even though it wasn't Cassie's fault.

"Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." -The Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America

Lynching

Lynching means to kill someone, especially by hanging. They lych rather an alleged offense with or without a legal trial. For example in Roll of thunder it shows when TJ tells a story about how people got lynched. A direct quote is “These folks gettin’ so bad in here. Heard tell they lynched a boy a few days ago at Crosston.”
