Tanzanite a geological phenomenon...

A gemstone “1000 times more rarer than diamonds”

DISCOVER TANZANITE

From deep in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania comes tanzanite, a gemstone with only a single known source that has become one of the most intriguing and desirable precious gemstones of modern times. It is a variety of the mineral zoisite and varies from blue, to violet, or purple in colour. Described as ‘a geological phenomenon’, tanzanite is 1,000 times more rare than diamonds. Tanzanite jewellery is extremely valuable and coveted, both for the gem’s rarity, as well as its beauty.

Choosing your Tanzanite

As with many other gemstones, Tanzanite is geraded according to the 4C’s -

Color

Good quality tanzanite has a deep royal blue or violet colour. Colours range from rich royal blues or vibrant violet to paler shades. The colour dominance depends on whether the gem is cut and polished from the long or the short axis of the crystal shaped rough tanzanite; and the more intense the colour the better the quality.

Though personal preference should be considered before making a tanzanite purchase, it is generally accepted that blue-dominant tanzanite is a better option from an investment point of view, as it is more rare and likely to yield a higher return

Cut

A good cut always enhances the stone And brings out its inner beauty. Because of its pleochroism—the ability to show different colors when viewed in different crystal directions—cutting direction determines the gem’s overall face-up color.

Clarity

Much of the tanzanite sold for jewelry has inclusions that can be seen only under magnification, so any eye-visible inclusions cause a drop in value. Also, any inclusions that might pose durability problems, such as fractures, lower tanzanite value greatly.

Carat weight

Tanzanite is available in a wide variety of sizes, shapes, and faceting designs. The finest and deepest colors are usually seen in sizes over 5 carats. Smaller stones are often less intense in color.
