The Adirondack park is large spanning about 9000 miles or about 6000 acres. This land is mostly forests but there are also about 10000 lakes, 30000 miles of rivers and streams, and a wide variety of other habitats including wetlands and old growth forests. There are also many mountains and hills across the Adirondacks with mount Marcy being the highest mountain.

The Adirondacks has some unique features. The mountains in the Adirondacks have a very different shape them most mountain ranges. The rocks that form these mountains are more than 1 billion years old even though the mountains are only about 5 million years old. The Adirondacks has many unique features that were caused be glacial erosion and deposition, such as kettle lakes and kettle ponds. The combination of the temperate forest and the boreal forests in the area is unique. The area┬┤s great diversity both biologically and ecologically make it a very unique location that should be further protected.

The bedrock of the Adirondacks is from the middle Proterozoic era, it is composed mostly of gneiss, quartzite, and marble, the higher elevations are composed of anorthositic rocks. The mineral and rock resources in the Adirondacks are dominantly wollastonite, quartz, garnet, dolomite, sphalerite, talc, pyrite, graphite, halite, mica, magnetite, and slate. The Adirondacks has developed through lots of weathering, erosion, and deposition. Mostly this was caused by glaciers which once shaped the land we know now.
