The Nordic Model vs. The U.S. Model By alexis garcia

The types of governent

The Nordic states includes combinations of free market government along with aspects of capitalism with welfare state and collective bargaining at the national level

the United states government is best categorized as a constitutional federal republic. it is based on the relationship between the federal government and the states, which retain a measure of self-government

The U.S. government assists the people by:

  • Affordable housing
  • food assistance
  • programs and benefits for active military family
  • financial aid for students

The government assists people of the Nordic states with:

  • Free health care
  • Free schooling that goes up through the university
  • Free Daycare
  • Free Paternity/Maternity care for 15 months
  • Free dentistry up to 22 years of age

In the US tax rates are at about 15.4% Norway is at 28% Denmark is at 56% Sweden is 57% Finland is about 32% and Iceland is 46%

For education the scandinavian countries are all rated really high and finland is #1 but for the U.S. its education usually falls behind the scandinavian countries at about #4

Both the U.S. and scandinavian countries offer basic "free" services like some schooling, emergency services, and in scandinavia only... free dentistry

U.S.

  • Pros:
  • Free emergency services like police and fire department
  • Affordable housing
  • Taxes from your paycheck aren't as high
  • Cons:
  • Expensive school
  • No free healthcare
  • Daycare is expensive

Scandinavian countries

  • Pros:
  • Free health care
  • Free schooling and free college
  • Free services
  • Cons:
  • Up to 50% of your paycheck is taken for taxes
  • still pay for private healthcare
  • "Pay" for other peoples services

Which do I prefer?

I personally lean more towards the scandinavian system because of all the free benefits that come with living there. The system there is more fair to all people and more people get free schooling . Also their education rankings are high.
