NPHS chapter of the science national honor society hosts kids camp
written by johnathAn ehle, nphs student
The New Palestine High School chapter of the Science National Honor Society recently hosted its very first kids camp! This camp was a fun and educational experience for the children in the surrounding community. The camp included a meal, a camp t-shirt, and six scientific labs/experiments. The kids extracted DNA from strawberries, made slime, went on a nature walk, dug for dinosaurs and identified them, did an egg drop experiment, and created a tornado in a jar. The experiments coincided with many of the science courses taught at the high school. The camp went well. Because of this, in the future, Mrs. Seifert, our society’s teacher sponsor, would like to host a Saturday morning camp at the high school once every couple of months with a particular science focus.
Doe Creek Middle School’s end of the year Young Hoosier celebration!
written by Judy alcorn
DCMS Media Director, Judy Alcorn, and teachers, Fred Fox and Jaemala Smith, enjoyed a day out with 22 students that read all twenty of the Middle School Young Hoosier Award Books. The group had a very exciting time bowling, and afterwards had a nice lunch at the Mug.
DCMS has participated in the Indiana Young Hoosier program for many years. While not every student sets the goal to read all the books, most every student will read one or more of these books. The list contains a variety of books; Graphic novels, Non-fiction, and Fiction, a little something for everyone.
First Annual All-School Field Day
NPE held its first annual all-school Field Day on May 17th. It was a great day full of fun! Students spent time at several stations and field events. They got to tackle a huge obstacle course paid for by the NPE PTO, eat hot dogs grilled by their principals, and have an ice cream treat. Thank you to the many volunteers who helped make the day possible, and the parents who came to enjoy the day with their children. We look forward to having Field Day again next year!
Change for a Cure at SCE
Mrs. Merritt's fourth grade class was excited to be named as the class that raised the most money for the Cystic Fibrosis Change for a Cure fundraiser at SCE. Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a lifelong disease that affects a child’s lungs and digestive system, creating life-threatening lung infections and making it difficult for the body to absorb food. It affects 713 individuals in Indiana, including several kids right here in Hancock County! Mrs. Merritt's class contributed and raised $192.33! Overall, SCE raised $606.93 this month. Mrs. Merritt’s fourth graders earned a Mama Nita’s pizza party to celebrate.
4th Grade Southern Indiana Trip
SCE 4th graders went on their annual overnight field trip earlier this month. It was a wet field trip, but the kids and their parents still had a wonderful time. Students have been studying Indiana History all year. The trip was an interactive way for them to experience history. They started off with a visit to the George Rogers Clark Museum in Vincennes where they learned specifics about Ft. Sackville and the importance it had on the Revolutionary War. Students then trudged through the rain to New Harmony where they visited the Utopian settlement. Everyone spent the night in cabins near Abraham Lincoln’s boyhood home, toured his farm, and finished the trip at Marengo Cave.
Muffins with Mom
Last week, our students enjoyed breakfast with their mothers at SCE. There was a great turnout, and students were able to show their mom’s around their classrooms and visit with other SCE families. The SCE Gentleman’s Club served and made sure our mothers were well taken care of during the event.
