Michelle Wright

On March 9th, we were fortunate to have a special visitor in our school. Country Music star, Michelle Wright, who calls Merlin home, put on a special concert for our students, staff, LKDSB guests and school volunteers. Members of the press were also in attendance to document the event for radio and newspapers. We were all so thrilled to meet her. Many of our students had heard about Michelle over the years, but to meet her in person was a definite highlight for many. Even early in the morning, her voice was velvety smooth and students were in awe of her talent. She invited a few students to sing for her and we even had a couple of sing-a-long moments. Thank you Michelle for coming to visit us at MAPS.

We presented the plaque on the right as a gift for Michelle. The plaque on the left is at the school to commemorate her visit.
Michelle spent almost 2 hours singing to and even with our students. It was a great morning.

water does wonder challenge

Our school was selected as one of 10 LKDSB schools to participate in a Water program sponsored by CK Superkids and the Public Health Unit. All staff and students were given a refillable water bottle and participated in activities and a weekly challenge. One of our Grade 6 students, Riley, was recognized for his enthusiasm for the program and received a $50 Gift Card from Sportcheck. Congratulations Riley!

One of our classes was selected as a high scorer for the challenge and will receive a free healthy lunch from CK Superkids. Congratulations to Mrs. Warkentin's FDK class for their excellent participation. One of our FDK students, Emerson, was selected to be interviewed on CKXS Radio. She did a wonderful job and represented our school well! Our school will also receive $1,000 to spend on Gym and Recess equipment. Thank you CK Superkids!

Finally, we were successful in our grant application to have a Refillable Water Bottle Station installed in our school. Plans are currently underway for its installation. We are so fortunate to partner with CK Superkids and the Public Health Unit! #thankyou

Pediculosis—Head Checks

Head checks occur at regular intervals throughout the school year, especially after a lengthy break from school. Any person can be infested with head lice irrespective of age or gender. They are equally attracted to clean and dirty hair. Head Lice are most commonly found in school children; the most vulnerable age for catching head lice infestation remains 4-11 years.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to conduct regular head checks as well as pediculosis is a common occurrence at school. For more information on prevention and treatment, please visit the link below from the Public Health Unit.

Earth Day 2017

What’s happening for Earth Day 2017? At Merlin Area Public School , we are going to EarthPLAY for Earth Day! On April 21st, we will join students across Canada to get outside, connect to our nature, have fun and #Play4EarthDay. We'll also be planting a tree donated by the Tilbury Horticultural Society in honour of Canada's 150th Birthday! In addition, we'll be doing a Pitch In & Clean Up event around the school and the community. Lots of exciting things happening!

Spring flower fundraiser

For our Spring Fundraiser, we've partnered with The Flowerbed Nursery to offer a variety of geraniums, hanging baskets, planters and a variety of accent plants. Instructions and order forms will go home Monday, April 24th and students will have until May 7th to complete orders. Money and forms are due back to the school on Monday, May 8th. student transportation

Student Transportation has recently developed a survey intended for parents and guardians to fill out. Your responses are very helpful in future developments in transportation, so we would really appreciate it if you could take a few minutes to complete the survey included in the link. Thank you!

learning commons

During the month of March, our Library underwent a significant renovation to convert it into a Learning Commons. With the move towards more mobile and flexible learning environments, libraries and computer labs across the LKDSB have undergone similar renovations. Students can now enjoy a bright new learning space, complete with new white boards, charging stations, mobile book shelves, café chairs, flexible seating and more. We still have a few items to purchase, so our space continues to evolve. Feel free to drop into the school to see our new Learning Commons in person! Our students are in the process of choosing a name for the new space, so stay tuned for an update on that!

Students have enjoyed their first few days in the new space.

new school bus info app

Getting information about school bus cancellations and delays just got a little bit easier. CLASS has launched a new mobile app that will provide subscribers with real-time notifications whenever buses are delayed by 10 minutes or more. The notifications will come in the form of alerts, which will also include service cancellations due to adverse weather conditions. The app allows subscribers to quickly select the morning and afternoon buses for which they wish to receive updates from a simple drop down menu. For additional information about using the mobile app, please visit the link below.

Bus delay and weather cancellation information will also continue to be posted on the CLASS website at www.schoolbusinfo.com.

EQAO assesses how well Ontario’s public education system is developing students’ reading, writing and math skills. EQAO provides reliable and useful information that is used to help improve student achievement and ensure the accountability of school boards. This year, Grade 3 and Grade 6 students will be participating in assessments from May 23 through June 5, 2017.

muskoka woods

On April 24th, our Grade 8 students along with Mr. Sanders and Mrs. VanDenBossche, will be travelling to Northern Ontario for a 3 day experience at Muskoka Woods Camp. Along with many other Grade 8 students and High School leaders from across the board, our graduating class will get to the opportunity to make new friends and connect with other students transitioning to high school. This is an excellent opportunity for our students to participate in some team building activities as well as engage in a wide variety of physical activities such as high and low ropes, Zip Line, pickle ball, archery, giant swing, Ultimate Frisbee, nature hikes, and more. We're looking forward to an exciting trip!

Mrs. V.'s Principal Exchange

During March Break, I had the amazing opportunity to travel to Italy to participate in a principal exchange. I had been matched with an Italian Principal through our professional organization, Ontario Principal's Council. Forty-seven principals from across Ontario participated in this Global Principal Exchange in countries including Italy, Sweden, and Norway. I was so fortunate to be partnered with Mrs. Alessandra Massucco from the city of Savigliano, Italy, about 3 hours north of Nice, France, and about an hour from the Swiss Alps, which I could see clearly during our daily walks. I've included a few pictures of my takeoff from Torino en route back to Canada as well as a few flying over The Alps. Breathtaking.

Savigliano, Italy

Mrs. Massucco is a Principal at an elementary school in Savigliano, spread over 4 buildings (Kindergarten, Primary, Middle, and Country) AND a secondary school about 20km away in Fossano. I went to school every day with Mrs. Massucco, met some wonderful staff and students and learned much about our similarities and differences.

Mrs. Massucco will be coming to Canada to shadow me and spend time at MAPS during the last week of April. She'll also be joining me and Mr. Sanders, and our Grade 8 students for our trip to Muskoka Woods. It will be a wonderful experience for her to see Northern Ontario and to spend time in a more relaxed environment with other Principals, Teachers and Students.
