Northwestern Wrestling October, 2018 Newsletter

It is hard to believe the 2018/19 season is all but upon us! It feels like yesterday that our first-year student-athletes were moving into their dorm rooms, and our upperclassmen returning to campus eager to start training once again. And, perhaps even more eager to shoot their coaching staff with as many paintballs as possible at our annual team-building activity.

The team has worked incredibly hard over the past six weeks in everything from practice…

To running the stadium…

And, my favorite, the infamous jug-run!

As the preseason comes to an end, Wildcat Wrestling could not be in a better place to get the party started. We have 7 NU wrestlers ranked in the top-20 at their respective weight class in at least one poll, with returning All-American Sebastian Rivera leading the pack, coming in as high as #2 in the country at 125lbs!

The team is currently ranked #15th in tournament rankings and #16 for duals. Not a bad place to start the climb! In just over a week we will head to Fargo, ND to take on the Bison of North Dakota State in our first competition of the year. That match with take place on 11/4. This will be a great opportunity for team to showcase the gains they have made throughout the off-season.

Next, Wildcat Wrestling will return home to kick off an extremely impressive home schedule. I would even go as far as to say that this year’s home schedule is the best in the history of the program! Your ‘Cats will host Penn State, Ohio State, Iowa, Virginia Tech, Illinois and Minnesota. These teams finished 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 8th, 13th and 17th at last year’s NCAA tournament. All of these matches will take place in the new and greatly improved Welsh Ryan Arena. I promise you will be thoroughly impressed with both the level of competition and the new home of Northwestern Wrestling. With that said, click the link included in the email and buy your season tickets today!

In other news, we are proud to say that for the second year in a row a member of the Northwestern Wrestling team has been honored with winning the prestigious Kabiller Award- a grant awarded to Northwestern student-athletes to enhance their professional development. Redshirt Sophomore, Eric Yang joins Alumni, Luke Norland, as a member of this exclusive group.

Lastly, please keep an eye out for correspondence regarding both the Northwestern Wrestling Pin Pledge as well as weight class-sponsorships. Fundraising is essential to continuing to build our program into one of the nation’s best. All of your support is greatly appreciated.

Hope to see you all at our matches this season!
