Serving Those In Need In The Greater Mechanicsville Area Restoration Missions Supports Locally

Mechanicsville Churches Emergency Functions (MCEF)

Mechanicsville Churches Emergency Functions, known locally as MCEF, has served the Mechanicsville area for more than 40 years. The organization pulls together resources provided by more than 30 churches and members of the community at large to serve people in Hanover County who are in need. MCEF operates a "One-Stop Shop" -- located at 7235 Stonewall Parkway, at the rear of the building, next to the Hanover Adult Center -- with clothes, linens and housewares; a food pantry; and, assistance for people needing help with financial concerns in emergency situations.

MCEF provides food, nutrition classes, and clothing to many families whose children attend Mechanicsville Elementary School; 53% of its student population uses the Free and Reduced Breakfast/Lunch program offered to them. MCEF also partners with other institutions in a backpack ministry, which provides backpacks with food to take home for the weekend to students who meet the low-income criteria.

MCEF's "Clothes Closet"

As of JANUARY 2019: MCEF's "one-stop shop" has need of the following:

  • CLOTHING: Winter clothing in good condition, including Winter coats, for school-aged children
  • LINENS: Queen-size bed sheets
Restoration Food Collections for MCEF

Restoration Church hosts food collection drives to re-stock MCEF's food pantry. Non-perishable canned and boxed food items will be collected on certain Sunday mornings before and after Restoration's worship service. Specific needs will be noted in Restoration's weekly announcements and social media outlets prior to the collection dates. Please bring only standard-sized canned items, bags and box mixes. Place items in handled bags for easier transport.

FOR JANUARY 27th FOOD COLLECTION: applesauce (23-24 oz. jars), jelly, rice (small bags), pasta sauce. Please do not donate extra large or economy sizes of any foods.

Senior Rides Program

MCEF also sponsors a "Senior Rides" program, for older adults who can no longer drive themselves, to fulfill needs such as medical appointments, trips to the grocery store or handling other personal business. Volunteer drivers use their own vehicles to drive and work with MCEF in scheduling. MCEF pays for volunteer driver training, provides insurance and reimburses drivers $.25 per mile.

If you are interested in "Senior Rides" and can share 8-10 hours per MONTH, please contact MCEF Senior Rides at (804) 357-9360. Or, e-mail -- Office@4mcef.com or DirSrRides@4mcef.com.

Ashland Christian Emergency Services (ACES)

The mission of Ashland Christian Emergency Services (ACES) is "To serve and address the unmet needs of the less fortunate in the Ashland community" ACES operates out of a building off Caroline Street in Ashland, across Route 1 from the Food Lion. The organization is supported by a number of community organizations, include scout troops, churches, schools and other groups and individuals in the area.

ACES accepts donations in the form of household items, non-perishable foods, and clothing. The organization also works in partnership with Mechanicsville Churches Emergency Functions (MCEF) to sponsor the "Senior Rides" program for older adults. (See program description under MCEF, above). "Lunch Buddies" mentoring program

"Lunch Buddies" is a mentoring program through John M. Gandy Elementary School in Ashland. Adults are paired with 3rd, 4th or 5th grade students from Gandy Elementary. Students build relationships with the adults during their lunch/recess time. Because this is a mentoring program, the commitment is with one child for the length of the school year (or beginning with your entry date into the program). Adults meet with students once a week for either 30 minutes or one hour, depending on student's grade level.

There is no formal training required. A 30-minute orientation with the school's guidance counselor is the gateway to serving. If you are interested in volunteering with or learning more about the "Lunch Buddies" program at Gandy Elementary, contact Restoration Ministry Assistant, Amanda Seiders, at aseiders@restorationrva.org, or call 804-299-3475.
