THE LIFE OF ARTHUR FELLIG

  • Fellig was born in the year 1899 in Ukraine, near Lemberg
  • Despite being born in Austria, his nationality was known as American
  • After him and his family emigrated to New York in 1909, his name was changed to Arthur
  • Began working as a commercial photographer and then moved onto be a dark room technician in 1924 but then left in the year 1935 to become a freelance photographer at the age of 36
  • After becoming a freelance news photographer, his name changed again to WeeGee, because of his style and techniques in his success

WEEGEES WORKS

  • He made his name when he showed he could always show up at the right place at the right time
  • To achieve this, he followed emergency services, documenting their jobs and what they found
  • He also tuned into the police frequency on the radio to find where his next piece of work was coming from
  • All of his works were of urban life in the lower east side of Manhattan, or urban life, crime, death and injury
  • He went onto publish photographic books and even worked in cinema, working with the likes of Jack Donohue and Stanley Kubrick making short films
  • He was known for his stark black and white street photography and his brutal pictures of the crime and death that was rife in the lower east side of New York

PIECES OF WORK

his work documented the life of everyone in the rough parts of Manhattan
not all of Felligs work was doom and gloom he managed to capture anything precious of that time also
