What is Matter? BY: Riley sherrod

Matter is ALL around you. Matter is anything that has mass. Basically you could say matter is anything that takes up space. There are two main parts of matter. There is a pure substance and a mixture each of these have different parts that you'll learn more about........

One part of matter is a pure substance. A pure substances are defined as substances that are made of only one type of atom or only one type of molecule. For example, carbon, carbon is a pure substance. A pure substance can either be an element or a compound. A compound is a thing that is composed of two or more separate elements. Water is a compound because it is made from two elements, hydrogen atoms and oxygen atoms.

Now, lets get to mixtures!!!!! Mixtures are a substance made by mixing other substances together. Mixtures are all around us. There are two types of mixtures homogeneous and heterogeneous. If you have a heterogeneous it can either be a colloid or a suspension. If you have a homogeneous it is a solution. watch the video below to get a better understanding of mixtures.

A colloid is a substance microscopically dispersed evenly throughout another substance.

A suspension is where the particles settle to the bottom of the liquid.
