Centennial Conference Championships Swarthmore Swimming 2016-2017

For the first time in Centennial Conference history and the first time since 1989, the men of the Swarthmore College Swim Team are officially Conference Champs!

To say the meet was incredible is a huge understatement. It was a magical weekend for our teams and I couldn't be more proud of a group of student-athletes!

The men outscored 6-time defending champions Gettysburg College by 120 points to win the meet 720-600.

18 Swarthmore College men's records fell and 10 NCAA B cuts were recorded over the weekend. 85% of our individual swims scored points and we won four of the five relays.

Swarthmore picked up four individual wins from Liam Fitzstevens '17 in the 400 IM and the 200 Backstroke, Andrew Steele '17 in the 100 Butterfly, and Jeff Tse '19 took the top spot in the 200 IM.

Sophomore Jeff Tse has one meet left as he will head to the NCAA D3 Championships in mid-march to compete in the 200 IM, 100 Back, and 100 Fly.

The women also had an incredible weekend finishing in third place, the team's highest finish since 2011.

Eight program records fell and the women earned top three finishes in three of the relays. 70% of our individual swims made it back to score in the top 16.

After finishing in fifth place at the 2016 Championship meet, the women had their sights set on a higher team finish. To be in contention for second place right up until the end was a testament to the hard work and determination of these women.

Sophomores Emily Bley and Liz Staton each came away with an individual conference title in the 400 IM and 200 Breaststroke, respectively. And to cap it off, first year Clare Cushing was named the Conference's Outstanding Rookie Performer.

With underclassmen making up 15 of our 18 conference team members, the future for the SwatSwim women is very bright!

On Sunday night we celebrated the end of the swimming careers for 11 awesome seniors. It's hard to imagine the pool without them in it but they've left an incredible legacy that has made each of us better.

We are immensely grateful to have had them at the helm of our program this year and we are excited to see what their futures have in store!

It's been a wild ride for this incredible group of 52 student-athletes this season and to cap things off with this historic weekend makes it all the more special.

The character traits that being a student-athlete at Swarthmore has instilled in each of them will last them a lifetime and we are so proud of their countless accomplishments.
