Matter is a physical substance in general, as distinct from mind and spirit. Here are some examples of matter.
Lets start with a Pure Substance. Pure substances are defined as substances that are made of only one type of atom or only one type of molecule (a group of atoms bonded together).
Elements are more than one hundred substances that cannot be chemically interconverted or broken down into simpler substances For example, copper, oxygen and nickel are all elements.
A compound is a pure substance composed of two or more different atoms chemically bonded to one another. An example of a compound is salt, sugar, and chalk.
Mixtures are a combination of different qualities, things, or emotions in which the component elements are individually distinct. For Example, dirt, ocean water and a salad.
There is also two types of mixtures.
A homogeneous is a mixture which has uniform composition and properties throughout. For example, coffee and kool-aid are homogeneous.
A solution is a homogeneous mixture composed of two or more substances. For example, salt water and rubbing alcohol.
A heterogeneous mixture is one which has a non-uniform composition. For example a mixture of sand and water, salad and Trail mix is heterogeneous.
Suspension is when particles are big enough to eventually settle. For example, if you pour oil into water and muddy water.
