Dear friends & supporters of Unite: We are just home from a brilliant and beautiful tour in Tanzania, working alongside many of Unite The World With Africa Foundation's partners and exploring new opportunities to be of impactful service to those living in greatest need. Seeing our girls give and receive love with such reckless abandon and complete each day exhausted with joy nourished my soul and further fueled my passion for and commitment to this work. Here, please find some GOOD UNITE NEWS updates and an announcement about our 1st-of-its-kind "Spirit Safari," which I will lead in February 2019 with Yoga & Reiki Master Jennifer Boyd of Westport, CT. We hope that you will join us (either on this tour or another Unite Tour Service Safari ). On behalf of our Board of Directors and Unite team around the world, ASANTE SANA, "thank you" for all that you have done and all that you continue to do to help make this work possible. The changes YOU are empowering are real and powerful. Countless lives are being transformed in miraculous ways, and for that -- for you -- we are eternally grateful. -- Anne Wells, Founder & Director
ST JOSEPH'S ORPHANAGE
For the 55 children living under the care of Sister Crispina Mnate at the St. Joseph's Orphanage in Kiserian, Tanzania, Unite is working to provide healthy food & quality medical care; a safe, comfortable and nurturing environment; high-quality English-speaking education (from pre-primary through university); access to sports, music and the arts; and much more. We are committed to doing everything necessary and possible to help ensure the short- and long-term success of each one of these boys and girls. Recently Sister Crispina welcomed six new Maasai orphans (three boys and three girls, each believed to be about 6 years old), and now our search for sponsors continues. (CLICK HERE to see their welcome dance for our family.) If you are interested, please email email@example.com.
WATER UPDATE: We have now successfully raised the $25,000 necessary to drill a ~170-meter-deep borehole and install the necessary pumps, raised tanks, and piping necessary to secure adequate and reliable water for the 250+ children and adults who now live, work and study on the 5-acre campus (which includes St. Joseph's and Heaven School). This trip we sat down together with our water team (which includes our 50% funding partner Leopard Foundation, the hydrologists and drillers, and St. Joseph's leadership) and determined that drilling will begin on June 3, 2018. We are so very grateful to the donors who have made this miracle possible. Water is LIFE! Hallelujah!
THE HEAVEN SCHOOL
The Heaven English-Medium Pre & Primary School started its 3rd year of operations in January 2018. There are now 200 students, ages 3 through 14, in baby class through Standard 7. The school has attracted bright and talented teachers from across the northern district and continues to perform in excellence, earning the respect and accolades of government officials as well as well as the praise of the local community members and families. Recently Heaven scored in the top 12% of schools across the nation. Take a glimpse INSIDE HEAVEN with this 30-second time-lapse video.
To build on Heaven's success and further empower the staff and students, we are now working to raise $5,000 to build out a COMPUTER LAB and purchase educational tools such as projectors, screens, and educational multi-media programs. To support this campaign, CLICK HERE.
UNITE SCHOLARS UPDATE
To empower an even greater number of at-risk children, specifically highly talented youth who have supportive-yet-struggling families, we launched our selective Unite Scholars program. To date we have five scholars, ages 13 to 21, across Tanzania. Our most recent addition is Hosiana Thomas Laitatok. Hosiana, 21, is a single Maasai mama living in Mkuru, Tanzania, with her mother and father and her father's two other wives and their combined 10 children. Also in their "boma" (a traditional Maasai homestead) live her uncle, his wives and their many children. We became acquainted with Hosiana through our Maasai Women's Health Program, run by Dr. Gideon Urion and Tati Oliver, Director of Tanzania Maasai Women Art. Hosiana has been vocal about her struggles with the extreme challenges faced by Maasai girls and women (who traditional have no rights and no voice in the Maasai culture). As a Unite Scholar, Hosiana will continue her education at Arusha Tangeru College where she will specialize in community development. Hosiana says she would like to bring an end to the widespread practices of child marriage and female genital mutilation. Both of Hosiana's parents support her choice to continue her education. Hosiana will be the only one in her entire extended family to attend to school beyond secondary. If you are interested in sponsoring Hosiana, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Through our Unite Tours Service Safari Program, run in partnership with JorAfrica Safaris, we organize wildlife safaris & field visits to our Foundation programs throughout the year. Tours led by Anne Wells run far less frequently, and space is always limited. Anne will lead a service trip in October 2018; however, that tour is full. The next trip led by Anne will be in February 2019. Anne is partnering with Unite advisor, physician's assistant and yoga & reiki master Jennifer Boyd for our 1st-ever SPIRIT SAFARI, which will include a unique focus on personal wellness, spiritual exploration and the healing of self, others and the planet.
