Unit 2: Topic D, Why do we have phobias

18/01/2017

Phobias

What if the phobia is irrational?

We have an inbuilt mechanism that has been developed through evolution that helps us make these LINKS . This is called preparedness. There are prepared stimuli and non prepared stimuli

How can nature explain Phobias?

Evolutionary Theory

We all have things that make our hair stand on and get our hearts pounding with fear

We have our evolutionary ancestors to thank for that

Being afraid of dangerous things was advantageous to our evolutionary ancestors

E.g. spiders, snakes and fire

Therefore, fear was adaptive, e.g. ensures survival

Theory of Preparedness

In class, as a group we did a slide on Trypophobia.
