The Blazer Phenom

Since joining the Lady Blazers back in 2015, Mitchell has excelled on the court. Madi has played in over 50 games as a member of the team. In those games, she has racked up nearly 720 points and started all but one of those contests. Mitchell had the honor of being listed as GSC Player of the Week three times in her stellar career. Even with all her personal success, Mitchell is quick to deflect attention and focus on the team aspect of basketball...

"I think the team is the most important. As a post player, I need other people to be successful. I don't always get to touch the ball. I need other players to pass me the ball or set a screen for me. Everyone has a role."

Madi Micthell's basketball journey did not begin at VSU. It started in a little town in South Georgia with her mom. Madi's mother Gina was her coach until left for college in 2014. The pair teamed up with the rest of the Crisp Academy Wildcats to win four consecutive Georgia Independent School Association Class-A State Championships for Women's hoops. Mitchell often thinks back to the final few moments on the court with her mom.

"I think my favorite memory is the last state championship game... I remember hearing the clock tick down and looking over at my mom and we were both in tears. We knew [our run together] was over but we still got to share one last win."

A 2017 Regular Season to Remember

Mitchell had herself one heck of a regular season for the Valdosta State Lady Blazers. She finished the season as the Gulf South Conference Player of the Year in Women's hoops. Following the conclusion of the regular season, Madi traveled with the rest of her Lady Blazers to Birmingham, Alabama for the Gulf South Conference Tournament. Mitchell and the ladies shined throughout tournament play. When all was said and done the VSU Women's Basketball team hoisted the GSC Championship trophy.

Madi (seen bottom right) won Tournament Most Valuable Player with her championship game effort of 28 points, 11 rebounds, and 3 assists.
"We worked so hard all year, and every game plan that Coach Kuhns has supplied us with has been spot on. Today, we were so well-prepared. We know we're dangerous because we have so many weapons, and this win shows how far we've come this year."

We want to congratulate Madi and the rest of her teammates and coaches on their GSC Title. We'll be sure to keep you up to date with all the NCAA Regional action as well as continuing our narrative on this one of kind young lady!

Before Madi was the Gulf South Conference Player of the Year, a WBCA Division II Honorable Mention, and the leader of the VSU Women's Basketball Team she was a high school All-star. Even though Mitchell has achieved success at both levels of play, she is quick to point out the noticeable differences in overall experience. While changing coaches and adapting to a new system were challenges, Madi's biggest observation was the difference in passion from her fellow players.

After a massively successful high school career, Madi Mitchell committed to Mercer University to play the sport she loves. Mitchell spent her first season of college ball as a reserve player for a mediocre Bears team in Macon, Ga. Once her freshman season ended, Madi took some time to reflect on her high school commitment. She decided that it was time for a change. Madi's new home would be some place she felt where she belonged. It would be a place she knew she could thrive: a place where she would make a name for herself...
