Moving to Maths 2.0 fostering curiosity and confidence with math skills

My name is Federica and I am a proud mother of four and an enthusiastic math & science teacher. I have only been teaching for less than 2 years in a public middle school (6th 7th & 8th grade).
I love trying out different teaching methods to engage my students and commit them to their own learning experience.
I think technology is a very important tool in today's education and I always encourage students and their families to use it!

WHY MATHS 2.0

I somehow try to engage my students with math games and visual math so that they get less frustrated than they said they were before entering middle school. I feel they underestimate their abilities and they are not involved in their own learning experience. That's what I want to foster in my students: self esteem!!!

PERSONALISING LEARNING

My students are aged 11 through 14 and most of them own smartphones, tablets or computers. They like using technology to learn Math: geogebra, excel, quizzes, videos,... They also like working on hands-on activities in groups. I always ecourage them to use visual and performing arts to explain what they have learnt.

BRINGING THE REAL WORLD INTO YOUR MATHS CLASSROOM

We are starting a brand new PBL activity but first we need to set the groups around a table. How many different ways can we arrange the kids of a group? Consider the preferences/needs each of them has (for example if one is left handed or absolutely needs a specific peer's help)

We see and hear Ferrari sports cars driving around us every day (since our school is in Maranello, hometown of Ferrari). What's the purpose of all those numbers behind the steering wheel?

CREATIVITY IN YOUR MATHS CLASSROOM

I am sure that being creative is what children love the most (and adults too, I bet!). So, why not letting them come up with performing or visual ideas that help them and their peers learn more? I particularly love music!!!!

COLLABORATION IN YOUR MATHS CLASSROOM

This is a blog of great inspiration for collaborative mathematics. Check it out!!!

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES IN YOUR MATHS CLASSROOM

To me, ICT is a must! Kids love technology and so do I. It makes things so much easier and saves time that can be used to create and explore many other things. I also love it to communicate with my students and their parents outside the classroom.
