Instead of trying to eliminate your weaknesses – try developing them into strengths!

In an ideal world, we would all be good at everything. We would find nothing challenging and every task thrown at us would generate a successful outcome and be completed with ease. The fact is not everyone is perfect. We all have our strengths and weaknesses and we should always work to our strengths.

In an interview we all apprehend the dreaded question - “What are your greatest weaknesses?” or “Name 3 of your greatest weaknesses.” We have created a plan to calm your nerves and prevent you from stopping dead in your tracks.

The key element to this question is preparation. Usually you will be asked to provide 3 weaknesses, although it’s always best to prepare an extra one just in case the interviewer asks you for another on the spot.

Remember: the interviewer’s intention of asking this question is not to humiliate you and draw attention to your weaknesses, it is to understand how self-aware you are and assess how you answer the question.

Accepted wisdom tells us to extol the virtues of the former and put a positive spin on the latter, seeing so-called weaknesses as something that can in fact be beneficial. Nothing is more satisfying than turning people’s criticisms and negative perceptions of you on their head and using them to your own advantage. Forget about trying to hide your weaknesses and focus instead on changing how and when you deploy them.

Take being ‘Indecisive’ as an example – if you’re calm, measured, rational and reluctant to rush into things you’re sure to have had this criticism levelled at you, but there’s nothing wrong with you being patient and taking your time to decide on important matters.

'Shy'– a shy individual has no place in a 'brash' business and introvert personalities will often struggle in office environments where communication and confidence are key. Conversely, if you mention that you are a more ‘reflective’ person rather than shy , this will show the recruiters that you assess each situation before showing emotions or reacting.
