My fellow Indian's, the way we are being treated by the British and their rule will never be fair. They have taken away our rights, changed the way we dress and we have been through enough. I say it's time to do something about it.
Great Britain has taken away any chance we have at becoming successful as a people. Recently, British officials introduced taxation on salt production in places such as Dandi which is our most significant production area. This is taking away our money and our rights. Anyone who is to touch the salt in these areas will be jailed because the British have made it illegal.
Together, we can non-violently fight back. I will be conducting a salt march starting on March 12th. It will represent so much more than just gaining back our rights to salt production without taxes, it will represent our strength as one and our dedication to being civil.
My march will begin soon and we will take our first of many steps near the city of Ahmedabad. This journey is expecting to take us near to a month and the path we will take will be 240 miles long. With your commitment, I'm hoping to gain back what is ours without using violence.
Our march is over now and it has taken us 24 days. Here we stand in Dandi, looking out over the Arabian Sea. Thank you to all who came and joined. at 6:30 am on the 6th of April 1930, we broke the laws. We will continue to do so even if that means being jailed. Stand up for what you believe in and don't let the British Raj control us or the way we act towards it.
This is by far the hardest thing Great Britain will face if we continue down this path. So many of us have been jailed and we can't stop now. Remember to keep wearing your homespun's, refusing taxes and keeping your culture.
It is now August 1947 and we have won. I stand here not only as a result of our freedom, but in awe of it! Through civil disobedience, non violence and strong belief, we have India and Pakistan to our own now, independent from Great Britain.
Although many thought it would never happen, in fact it has. We now may grow as our own and become strong once again.
