  1. travel in 2+
  2. dont go out at night
  3. share resources
  4. clean up after yourself
  5. communicate effectively
  6. do your job
  7. do not kill each other

Q2. pick the rule you find most important and explain why that rule, above all others is most important on this island. I think the most important rule is to travel in 2+ because if something bad happens to one of them then one of them can go get help.

I think the theme of this novel is survival because, they are stuck on an island with nothing but the resources around them and no one knows where they are to come find them and rescue them so they have to survive on there own.

-The shelters of the island-

Q3. Ralph has said, “This is a good island” (Golding 35). Ralph’s pronouncement will prove ironic; it is definitely NOT a good island. What problems do readers already know about? Explain why these problems prove this is NOT a good island after all? Some of the problems are that there are no parents, there not following the rules they made, the kids said they seen something that looked like a snake, the jungle caught on fire, one of the kids died, and they couldn't signal the boat cause someone left the fire unsupervised. Thats why its not a good island.

-The jungle fire-

Q4. Symbols are physical things that represent abstract ideas. The following are some of the symbols from the novel The Lord of the Flies.

  • Meat symbolizes the temptation the boys face on the island.
  • the conch symbolizes law and order because it represents respect for rules
  • the island symbolizes isolation because there stuck on the island
  • smoke symbolizes rescue because they are going to make smoke cloud to be rescued
  • the platform symbolizes democracy because thats were the boys choose a leader
  • piggys glasses symbolizes survival
  • painted faces symbolizes anonymity
  • simon symbolizes goodness
  • piggy symbolizes civilization

Q5. Describe the Beast that seems to be stalking the island. Use the text as backup for your info. The older boys think its just a imaginary thing the little boys had dreamed about. But the little boys believe its real cause they said they seen it and they even described it. Also just recently Sam and Eric had said they seen it and it had chased them. Sam and Eric also said that the beast had eyes, teeth, and claws and that the beast chased them on (pg. 100)

-what the beast may look like-

Q6. Name at least two things the boys are doing or have given up that show how they are now operating on instinct and no longer trying to follow the rules of society. Explain your answers with information from the text. They seem to not be following the rule about talking only if you have the conch, but it seems it only happens when piggy is talking with the conch. They also havent followed the rule about doing your job because they havent been keeping the fire going and thats a major problem because if they dont have the fire going they wont get rescued.

Q7. Two rituals people are most familiar with are weddings and funerals. Pick an event (a wedding or a funeral). Make a list of at least 3 phrases people use at the event you picked. Using one of your phrases, explain why your phrase is helpful in the situation. 3 phrases they use at Weddings are "hear comes the bride" for when the bride is coming down the aisle, or they use "speak now or forever hold your peace", and they also use "I now pronounce you husband and wife". The phrase that's helpful in a Wedding is "I now pronounce you husband and wife" because if that is what makes the couple married under law.

Q7. Choose a character, either Ralph or Jack and explain the effect seeing the Beast has on the character you have chosen. Use textual information to support your answer. Sometimes if you are away from society for a long time or are stranded some where for a long time you start to go a bit crazy and I think that's what Jack is doing. He thinks that in order to survive he has to start making sacrifices for the beast so it wont attack them. The effect the beast has had on Jack is that Jack has now started making sacrifices for the beast by going out and hunting for pigs so he can leave a sacrifice because he thinks that the beast will get them if he doesn't leaving something for the beast. What he had left as a sacrifice was the pigs head and guts but he took the meat. But I don't understand why he'd leave the guts and head and took the meat cause I think when you make a sacrifice that you are suppose to leave something that you want but give it to a God or in this case the beast. So I don't really think its a sacrifice textual evidence: "This head is for the beast. its a gift" (Golding, pg.137)

how Jack maybe it acting like a tribal leader

Q8. Retell in your own words what has happened to Simon. Use textual evidence to help you create a vivid paragraph. Simon has been beat up by the boys and has been killed because they were doing there dance and they got frightened because he come out of no where and scared them so their first response was to attack so they attacked him not knowing it was him and killed him. "Simon's dead body moved out toward the open sea" (Golding pg. 154)

Q9. In life people create groups. These groups might be at school, in sports, in extracurricular activities, and through religious organizations. Explain what needs groups fill for people. Explain both the positive and negative aspects of being part of a group. You may relate this to our novel, or you may make it a person reflection of your own experience. The position effects of being in a group is that the people in the group help you and support you in what ever it is

Q10. “Which is better - to have rules and agree, or to hunt and kill?” Using this quote, take a stand. Pick a side and explain why your decision is best on this island here at the end of Chapter 11. Don’t forget to use textual evidence to support your answer. I think the best decision is to have rules and agree because then everyone is working together so that they can get of the island faster because there's no conflicts and it makes it easier to do things that need to be done in order to be rescued. Because as you have already seen in the book there not working together and 2 of the characters end up dying

Q11. Today’s assignment requires you to think about the book as a whole. Your directions are to choose a picture and a quote from the book and add it to your blog. For the text (7-9 sentences), explain why you chose the picture and the caption to summarize your experience with the book.

“We did everything adults would do. What went wrong?”

I chose this picture and this quote because the picture represents them on the island in there shelters surviving and with the fire thats sending out a smoke signal so that they can be rescued. The reason i chose the quote is because it is saying that they did everything an adult would do but something went wrong and what i think went wrong was there was no true authority meaning like there wasn't someone who would say were doing this and your gonna do it, and if they didn't do something the leader told them to then they would get punished. But they didn't do that so everything didn't get done and people left and some even died cause they had no true authority.

A. What did you think about the novel?

I liked the novel because it had a lot of expense in it because there was always something frightening going on like when the boys thought a beast was chasing them for when Jack and his tribe attacked Ralph's camp, and also the deaths of Simon and Piggy. I also liked that it had alot of survival things in it like then they needed fire so they used Piggy's glasses and how they made their rituals so the beast wouldn't attack them, and also how they used the smoke from a fire to be rescued. Thats why I liked this novel cause there was always something going on.

B. Explain how you best enjoyed the novel: the British man, reading on your own, or me reading.

I liked it when there was someone else reading like the British man or you. But i preferred it when the British man read it because he made it sound like the actual characters cause he is British and he makes things sound like how the boys in the book would say things. Plus since hes British he probably understands what the boys are saying better.

C. The Adobe Spark Blog

I loved using adobe spark it was easier to use and it was also easy to do things on the computer because like if i needed a picture of a fire I wouldn't have to draw it all I would have to do is search it up and its right there and its faster this way. It also made it easy to put words down like if i had to do all of this on paper it would take forever to write all of this. But its easier cause instead of having to write out the letter I could just hit a button and there it is. So my experience using adobe spark was amazing and easier and faster.
