It’s minimalist duck hunting. No big spreads,
no crafty blind. Just you and the dog and a
quiet canoe, easing downstream and sneaking
around bends. A few quick calls and wait for
an answer. Sometimes there’s nothing. Sometimes
the winter sky fills with mallards.
A few quick shots and the Lab’s artful retrieve,
and it’s on downstream to the next bend. Drift
around slowly or beach her quietly and steal
across on foot. A duck here and a duck there,
and before you know it the day’s half gone.
