BREAKING NEWS~ Conti School Educator is District Teacher of the Year!

Today, at a gathering celebrating "Teacher of the Year" honorees from each of the Jersey City public schools, we were thrilled to learn that our Middle School Language Arts Specialist Omar Alvarez has been selected 2019 Teacher of the Year for the whole Jersey City Public Schools district! Mr. Alvarez will now be in contention for the County and NJ State Teacher of the Year titles. Such exciting news!

Acting Superintendent Mr. Franklin Walker, Paul Silverman, and 2018 District Teacher of the Year Ahmed Hassanein congratulating Mr. Alvarez on being named 2019 District Teacher of the Year.

As finalists in the The Jersey City STEAM Sustainability Challenge, The Greenifiers Team, made up of Conti 8th-graders, will compete in the next round scheduled for May 3rd at City Hall. More than 25 teams (from elementary, middle, and high schools throughout the district) were challenged to identify and present solutions to sustainability-related issues in their own neighborhoods. They now get to pitch their project to a panel of city officials and local stakeholders for an opportunity to be awarded funding to implement their project.

Our middle school students are attempting to transform a blighted area near our school into a lush community garden, installed with "buddy benches" to remind visitors about the importance of inclusion, and to help build pride and a sense of ownership.

Combating Food Waste

Our 3rd graders have been exploring ways to reduce, recycle, and recover food waste in our school community. Earlier in the marking period, they met with Principal John J. Rivero & Assistant Principal Alan LaMonica to share their reports, survey results, and to suggest solutions, such as serving meals that are more appealing to students. Following up, they recently met with JCPS Food Services Director Jennifer Zeligson to voice their opinions about the breakfasts and lunches served at our school. This was a productive discussion and our students are looking forward to further improvements.

At the meeting with Ms. Zeglison, our students got to sample new dish options that may be added to the food menu.

Pennies for Patients Fundraiser(s)

Check out how two of our students, 2nd-grader Ian Clegg, along with his sister Ana (PreK4), spent a recent chilly weekend day:

Ian set up a bake sale. All on his own initiative (with the help of his dad for the baking part, and his sister for the selling part!)

A reminder we are entering the final weeks of our Pennies for Patients fundraiser ~

JC Public Schools art exhibit

Two of our talented students, 8th-grader Nimra Asif (standing under her drawing) and 3rd grader Sofia Seminowicz (holding her art) have their work on display at City Hall as part of the 2019 Jersey City Public Schools Art Exhibit.

PI Day...& Field trips

6th grade math students celebrated by making "Pi Bracelets" using beads that were strung according to Pi's digits.
Conti 5th-grade students celebrated by bringing in ethnic foods that are important to their culture & family traditions. The home-made dishes were made by following recipes used in a math project which required students to multiply fractions to change the serving size of the original recipe. Students, teachers and administrators had a wonderful time learning more about each other by trying cuisine from around the world.

Our 5th-graders also had a terrific time at Liberty Science Center, exploring unique inquiry-based exhibits.

Celebrating Women...& Reading!

Conti 1st-graders spent the past month learning about women who have influenced the world, and discussing ways they themselves can make an impact on the community. Here they are in Room 208 celebrating International Women's Day!
1st graders also spent a week celebrating Dr. Seuss, with activities like Pajama Day, Wacky Wednesday, and Crazy Hat Day... and of course, they and the rest of our school marked Read Across America Day, with VIP guest readers, including Freeholder Joel Torres, JCPS board members Mussab Ali, Gina Verdibello, and many more. Thank you to all!
