No, wait! It's an EMS Pediatric Care Coordinator!

The IOM report "Emergency Care for Children: Growing Pains" recommends that EMS agencies and emergency departments (EDs) appoint a Pediatric Emergency Care Coordinator (PECC) to advocate and provide pediatric leadership for the organization.

What is a PECC...

...and what do they do?

A Pediatric Emergency Care Coordinator (PECC) is an individual who is a champion for the emergency care of kids for their EMS agency or multiple agencies within their community.

Many of you already engage in Pediatric Emergency Care Coordination responsibilities every day; a PECC can be an individual already in place who assumes this role as part of their existing agency activities.

A PECC is responsible for coordinating one or more of the below list of activities for their agency

  • Communicates safety and healthcare needs of children within their community.
  • Advocates for the pediatric perspective during development of EMS protocols.
  • Promotes pediatric continuing-education, training opportunities and pediatric injury prevention programs.

A PECC is responsible for coordinating one or more of the below list of activities for their agency:

  • Ensures the availability of pediatric medications, equipment and supplies.
  • Participates in pediatric quality improvement activities.
  • Maintains a relationship with the Regional PECC and the EMS for Children Program Coordinator.

A recent study found that EMS agencies with an individual or individuals who coordinated pediatric emergency care had an increased frequency of skill-checking of pediatric equipment.
