Fall 2018 Recruiting Dukes Digest James Madison University | Career & Academic Planning

CAP Community

We hope the start of the fall recruiting season has gone well for you. It is finally starting to cool off a bit in Harrisonburg and the leaves are making their first color changes. It is a very exciting time here at James Madison University, and it has been very busy in Career & Academic Planning as we adjust to all the changes we have seen over the summer.

One of our biggest changes is our move to Handshake. We know many of you are familiar with the platform and we hope the switch for JMU has made your lives easier in terms of posting positions, on-campus interviews and general familiarity with the system. Students are really loving the new platform and we have kicked off October with Handshake month. We gave out over 700 Handshake t-shirts to students to raise awareness of our new system. Students had to log in to Handshake in order to get their free t-shirt and many went beyond that to complete their profile and view positions. We have seen a huge increase in the amount of internship and job postings since we moved to Handshake and students are very excited about the increased variety. Word is getting out to students and we will continue to spread the word in creative ways to get JMU students connected to and using Handshake.

I am happy to be in a new role CAP, the Assistant Director of Employer Engagement. I look forward to building partnerships with new employers as well as discussing ways to enhance existing relationships with employers that have been recruiting at JMU for many years. I am not new to CAP, as I have been in the office since 2005 serving in a variety of different roles including career & academic advisor, liaison to various colleges and most recently as Internship Coordinator. I am excited about this new challenge and look forward to working with all of you.

We are happy to have welcomed many of you into the Interview Center at JMU so far this semester. If you haven’t been here yet, please consider coming for the spring semester.

We have a terrific staff in Employer Services that are here to help and look forward to partnering with you to make your recruiting experience successful.

Thank you,

Laura Hickerson
