Reception Class

Children have been learning all about Chinese New Year. We have been looking at the Chinese calendar and finding out all about the different animals. We made big firework pictures, created our own lucky Chinese money wallets and lanterns. We also made our own Chinese dragons and took part in some traditional Chinese dancing with our dragons. Miss Fairhurst

Year 1 enjoyed their Art session with Miss Poulter creating some fantastic water colour sunsets.

Year 2: We have had another exciting half term in Year 2, learning about dragons, flight and even mouldy bread! Miss Normington had a wonderful time teaching the class and has now moved on to her next teaching placement. We were very pleased to welcome parents and grandparents to our class collective worship where we investigated the Holy Trinity and what it means to us. We were also lucky enough to have a fantastic talk given by Mr Hudson to help us with our Flight topic. He told us all about parts of planes, uniform in the air force, map reading and life-saving equipment. Lots of us now want to be pilots too! Mrs Tucker

Year 6 had a fantastic start to the new term and 2019! We enjoyed having several Science Days focusing on Living Things and their Habitats. We designed our own zoo and classified the animals based upon their character and went on a habitat hunt. We watched micro-organisms grow over the half term and the results shocked us!

We celebrated Martin Luther King Day on Monday 21st January and worked with Year 5 for the morning. We learnt all about him, what he did, listened to some of his speeches and how he was a peaceful civil-rights activist. We wrote an explanation text about the effect he had on the world.

The Healthy Care Team came and spoke to us on Thursday 31st January all about our move to Secondary School and how we can stay healthy by the foods we eat and the exercise we complete.

In our English lessons we have been working very hard. We enjoyed writing riddles and acting them out for our classmates and Year 2 to try and solve! We then composed our own riddles and Mrs England had to solve them!

Finally, we learnt all about E-Safety and how to stay safe online. We discussed various scenarios and completed a Data Jargon Buster activity. Mrs England

Arts

This half term, all of the children at St. Mary’s have been looking at colour mixing and ways of using paint in their work. The school is being filled with beautiful creations including Papier-mâché hot air balloons, wooden kites, maps of the world, mosque silhouettes and dinosaurs. We have had the treat of a Y5 Samba Concert, led by Richmond School’s Mr. Boyd and an assembly to introduce children to the variety of instruments in which North Yorkshire Music Service can offer tuition. Each Thursday morning, we have a performance time before our hymn practice which children can volunteer to take part in and show off their fantastic skills. We have listened to piano, electric and acoustic guitar and violin so far and we are looking forward to many more performances! Mrs Tucker
