Expressive Portraits Art Foundations I

2nd Floor Morning Star Gallery, Stuart Hall

Students in Art Foundations I learned how to utilize the grid method to create their portrait in proportion. Along with this more calculated method, they were invited to add one additional expressive element to their portrait. After studying Frida Kahlo and Salvador Dali, they learned how to translate their unique essence through their self portrait photograph and communicate that within their drawing. Additionally, we looked at the work of Steven Ketchum and Yayoi Kusama; exploring how artists use line, color, and pattern to form each individual mark. Through studying the innate and primal history of mark making, students were encouraged to develop their own unique form of communication through both realistic and abstract visual representation.
