Finding Your Personal Legend Whats yours?

Thesis- Paulo Coelho's novel, The Alchemist stresses the importance of acknowledging ones Personal Legend, how to accomplish ones Personal Legend, and how to get through the tasks your Personal Legend sends you on while on your journey.

Explanation: In the novel, The Alchemist, finding ones Personal Legend is the main idea of the novel. Santiago, the protagonist, is on an adventure to find what he thinks is his Personal Legend, the buried treasure near the pyramids. However, his true Personal Legend was to be with the women he met in an earlier scene, Fatima.

Explanation: Atticus Finch had a Personal Legend he wanted to accomplish in the movie, To Kill a Mockingbird. His Personal Legend was to take the case of Tom Robinson who was accused of raping a girl, because of his skin color. Atticus thought it was not right for the people to say he was guilty, when the whole town knew he was not guilty.

Detail: " ' It's true that everything has its Personal Legend, but one day that Personal Legend will be realized. So each thing has to transform itself into something better, and acquire a new Personal Legend, until, someday, the Soul of the World becomes one thing only' " (Coelho 154).

Detail: In the movie, To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus says, "The one place where a man ought to get a square deal is in a courtroom, be he any color of the rainbow, but people have a way of carrying their resentments right into a jury box."

Commentary: Atticus now knows his Personal Legend, and is really trying to accomplish his Personal Legend which is what changes the minds of the citizens in Maycomb County. Just as Santiago changes the minds of the people he is with, who think the boy cannot achieve his Personal Legend.

Explanation: A totally different novel, Paul Zindel's, The Pigman, is about an elderly man, commonly known has The Pigman, who lost his wife in the past years, who then finds a two kids he feels like helping out when they ask him to give them money for their "charity" which ends up being a scam. However, this was The Pigman's Personal Legend, to help the kids. As you can see in the quote I picked, The Pigman was just scammed, then he invited the kids into his house, and gave them wine to show that he is trying to help these kids have a good time.

Detail: "He returned with three glasses of wine and that enormous smile of his" (Zindel 37).

Explanation: The novel, The Alchemist, is about accomplishing ones Personal Legend. In the novel, The Pigman, Mr. Pignatti wanted to accomplish his Personal Legend without even knowing what his Personal Legend was.

Detail: "And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you achieve it" (Coelho 24).

Commentary: Both of these novels have a protagonist that has his Personal Legend. All that they have to do, is want it. Which is what happens in both novels. In The Alchemist, Santiago wants to get the treasure so he can go back and marry Fatima. The Pigman wants to help the children be successful in life by teaching them what he has learned in his many past years.

Explanation: Now we move onto a poem that is different from both novels and the movie, The Odyssey. An Odyssey is defined as an extreme journey, which is exactly what happens. Odysseus tries to get home to his family after fighting in a war. In case you couldn't tell already, Odysseus' Personal Legend was to get home to his family. His has to cross many obstacles, which usually happens when one is trying to find his/her Personal Legend.

Detail: "He's plotting a way to journey home at last; he's never at a loss" (Fagels 84)

Explanation: What Coelho is saying, is that you should never give up. Keep going. Persevere. Perseverance is the only thing that kept Odysseus going on his journey home. He wanted to get home to his family, so he persevered to get home.

Detail: "Never stop dreaming. Follow the omens" (Coelho 40).

Commentary: These two quotes have one thing in common, they both say to keep going. Which is the topic in both the novel The Alchemist, and the poem, The Odyssey. The Alchemist's topic is to keep trying to find your Personal Legend, and to thrive to accomplish your Personal Legend. The Odyssey, well, the definition of an odyssey is an epic journey or adventure. Which is saying that your odyssey, or your Personal Legend, will have many different task along the way.

Summary: Very simply, we can conclude that Coelho's novel, The Alchemist, can be related to almost any piece of art, whether it be a poem, a movie, or even another novel. We can also conclude that The Alchemist can be compared with many different topics. Whether it be finding your Personal Legend, accomplishing your Personal Legend, or getting through the task on your way of succeeding your Personal Legend.
